Nice. Let's not forget that the Japanese market is less than 10% of the total.
And we had no significant DSLR announcement this year. Last year, DSLRs were sold (technically, shipped) in larger numbers in Japan, too.

Then we might want to realize this isn't about which technology is "winning" the market share "fight"; but what works best for us. MILC fanboys never care about that; they want any "competitor" killed with no regard of the consequences.

The thing is, I wasn't trying to save energy. Yes, I used the LCD, I had the GPS on, I shot RAW (thus, more to write to the card)...

Other times I've got fewer than 1,000 frames - just because I used a different shooting pattern.

What a load of... (ahem... be nice, Mr. K!) nonense!

"Like it or not"? Nobody's entitled to decide for the entire market; , "you must have this and only this".
On the contrary, it's the market which decides the DSLR's continuous survival - in other words, "like it or not" is the deciding factor.
And despite the desperate mirrorless propaganda, DSLRs continue to be more popular than MILCs. People like them a lot.

Nobody will stop you from thinking whatever you want, but your reasoning is deeply flawed.
Remember: over 1500 frames on a camera CIPA-rated for 760. I did that personally, and there's no mystery about how: I was not following CIPA's testing methodology.
One could also get much less.

I never put the K-5 through the same pace as I did with the K-1. Surprisingly, the very first test of the landscape-oriented FF was at an airshow...
So I cannot say that the K-5 can do the same, but I strongly suspect it likely does.

The factor making a huge difference was shooting bursts.

I've once got over 1500 frames with a single battery charge, with the K-1. Bursts, AF-C and with some LCD usage.

Lol.

On a serious note, what if the K-3's sensor was discontinued, and ordering a new batch from Sony could only be done in a quantity that's way larger than necessary?
Maybe Sony even scrapped equipment related to that sensor, maybe it was affected by the Kumamoto disaster. In any case, my guess is that continuing the K-3 production was deemed unfeasible/undesirable.

I don't see it as a purely marketing problem. Pentax doesn't have marketing problems, they're avoiding marketing altogether!

And that's a red herring - nobody said Jodi Palm decided anything. She was just passing information.

Yes, especially on the lens side.
People are in a hurry to interpret and misinterpret Asahiman's words, but it's something we can clearly see from the lens roadmap: one DA* vs 5 D FA and D FA* lenses. (sure, not all lenses would first appear on the roadmap)

The 09 Telephoto Macro was planned until it wasn't.
I would worry about the DA* 11-18mm disappearing only if it does. Otherwise, one could go as far as wondering each evening, "would the Sun come up again tomorrow?" ;)

They can't give up on APS-C until FF becomes much cheaper - and that will not happen anytime soon, if ever.

And it's unthinkable even now - the DA* 11-18mm f/2.8 is still planned for the next year, right? ;)
OTOH certain people tirelessly "predicted" the death of Pentax for decades. It doesn't bother them at all that they're wrong; they just do their job.

If you want to talk about the camera measurements, how about holding back on already made (and leaked) results until a "better" camera appeared? ;)
At least they're measuring, and not making up some numbers.

Optical Limit offers the line pairs per picture height numbers. I fail to see how those are less "hard" than DxOMark's bogo-pixels.

They are using RAW, not JPEGs - but on cameras, not on an optical bench. Which isn't necessarily the bad thing, if we keep in mind that results are camera-dependent and shouldn't be directly compared between systems (something Photozone/Optical Limits warns against).

Whatever; we're getting lost in details.
Thing is, I don't trust their methodologies and ways of assigning scores. And I trust much less their politics.

Sort the list by Sharpness (the second column); you have it sorted by the DxOMark Score (first column, default).
According to DxOMark, the D FA is soft wide open.

Pentax smc D FA MACRO 100mm F2.8 WR: 10 pMP
Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II: 10 pMP (but it's put before the Pentax if you sort after sharpness)
Despite the graphics showing what should be an easy win for the Pentax. But, who's looking at the graphics?

I wasn't talking about L lenses, but kit lenses - stuff like 18-55 f/3.5-5.6.
I don't expect Pentax lenses to measure better than the best Canons, except maybe for the D FA* 50mm ;)

Maybe I'm too harsh; after all, some Pentax lenses are well positioned on the DXOMark's APS-C list.
I had a look just so I wouldn't speak from distant memories. Some of the lenses less sharp than kit zooms:
- the 100mm macro
- 40mm Limited
- DA* 200 and 300mm

Not much. Just the occasional Limited which is less sharp than a Canikon kit lens... ;)
(on the same format, of course)

I have no reason to trust them ;)

To be honest, it's their lens tests that are particularly bad.
Then the policy of testing but not publishing results (until much, much later) for certain ;) brands...
