I doubt Tokina is selling more of the 50mm than Pentax. What made me think so is the other site's "I want it/I own it" counters, which don't represent much but Pentax' is an order a magnitude higher.
Yes, the Canon and Nikon user bases are much larger - but what if they (those looking for a 3rd-party 50mm) prefer the Sigma Art instead? (it doesn't have to be the better product).

No matter how much you invest into production and QC, you can't have a zero defect rate. Especially factoring in a rough shipping, maybe mishandling in the shop.
Is this a common occurrence or not? This is the question...
I'm also a bit concerned about the lens being exchanged by the dealer - would they attempt to re-sell it?
On a Romanian Facebook group, there was a discussion about a lens whose focus ring would not work. A really obvious defect. Surprise - that lens was previously returned by (at least) one other user for the same defect. And resold as new (not by Ricoh Imaging).

Neah, a * lens is in a completely another league than a lowish Sigma. ;)
By the way, from the PENTAX STAR LENS | RICOH IMAGING
"* lens: A Star lens series produced through the use of the latest optical technologies. It delivers the ultimate in digital images, and assures optimum image quality, operability and durability."
"Limited lens: A lens series delivering a truthful sense of depth and excellent imaging power that can’t be described by mere numerical values. Its machined aluminum-alloy body adds a sense of exclusivity."

And I realized I missed something: hand holdability. Sony A7 cameras are relatively compact, and there just isn't a lot of room between the grip and the lens' barrel.
Even Pentax' fatter lenses have a reduced diameter near the lens mount, because otherwise they would interfere with camera parts (pentaprism housing, usually). So it might be just a design decision for an "otherwise it won't fit".
L.E. Oh... Larry already mentioned that.

Maybe it's a result of their mount having a small diameter.

I'm thinking the same, and I like the idea - it's a sort of "rugged", "dependable" look, and indeed distinctive.

Hmm... maybe I'm wrong then.
The thing is, I expect a CP+ announcement - the GR III and, if it wasn't somehow postponed, the D FA 70-200 f/4. It feels weird to me to announce the higher-end products before that.
Except... there can be exceptions. The DA*, it was ready and they wanted it on the market in February. Ugh... it's complicated :)
Unless I'm receiving information about it, I'm not taking another announcement as granted or even very likely. I won't be disappointed this way ;)

Speaking of this: There was no chance Pentax would announce a new APS-C flagship a month before CP+. I'm surprised even about the DA*.
I don't know what we'll see at CP+, besides the GR III that is. But we'll find out by the end of February.

Don't see it as an update, but as continuing the production of the old FA. And it will all make sense.

For some reason, that made me think of a Rammstein song which is NSFQ (not safe for quoting), except for selected parts:
"Too big, to small
Size does matter after all" ---------- Post added 31-01-19 at 01:28 PM ----------
Even less than that: they're simply making new batches of the old FA.

I wonder which company would say, "yeah, we have f/2.8 APS-C zooms covering from 11mm to 135mm, but two of them are not so good, don't buy those"
Obviously their marketing is trying to emphasis the good points, not the bad ones.

I wasn't under NDA nor was I given such information, but I could've said and did say the same thing.
It's quite obvious.

I wonder if they're more or less the same people for whom every announcement is such a "tipping point".

Speaking of #2, does anyone have a picture with the KP's mainboard?
I have a possible (until I see the board) explanation for the small buffer. Yep, you guessed it, is small case ;)
More precisely, I'm guessing the KP might use a single RAM module. The K-3 and K-1 use 2, and even so they're limited by how much you can address with the PRIME/Milbeaut processor.
You can see here the K-r's mainboard; the CHIPSIP module is the RAM: https://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/img/dcw/docs/519/765/035.jpg |

Actually, after his constant Pentax bashing, I wouldn't even call that an opinion.
It's a no-brainer: releasing a product on the market costs money. They wouldn't finish and release it just because it was almost developed.

Again, this is January; this isn't even a CP+ announcement.
And you're ignoring the DA* - was that on purpose?
P.S. If the new 35mm had a DC motor, probably I would've ordered it on the spot. As a screw drive lens...

I agree about needing to do a new production run as a good occasion to update the coatings and cosmetics of the lens.
They are planning a modern 35mm (see the roadmap), but not at this price point. ---------- Post added 29-01-19 at 06:51 PM ----------
The photographic camera is even older.......... ;) ---------- Post added 29-01-19 at 06:54 PM ----------
Folks, it's still January!
Just yesterday, who was expecting a pre-CP+ announcement? Now that it happens, it's bad?

I don't think the HD version of the old FA is what appears as a "wide aperture wide-angle single focus lens" on the lens roadmap (that is also a * lens, judging by the coloring).
We'll have the confirmation when the roadmap will be updated.
I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't put a DC motor. Not enough to throw a tantrum, though. ;)
What is more interesting, IMO, is that this is a January announcement (and includes the DA*). There are 11 months left for further announcements this year.
