With respect, I'm not sure what you are describing is possible. The DOF at these magnifications would be measured in millimetres. If the background was more than a few inches away then it will be a completely unrecognisable blur, as in Margriet's picture. If you have quick browse through these search results I think you'll have a hard time finding any distinguishable backgrounds.

Unfortunately Margriet there don't seem to be any criteria for becoming a PEG judge. Some of the judges appear to be quite inexperienced photographers. The comment you have quoted above shows that particular judge's apparent lack of experience when it comes to macro photography. Not to mention the insulting little addendum. I wouldn't be surprised if that is the NatGeo judge again. Whoever it is certainly uses the same condescending tone.

I guess you should PM Adam. It appears that no one else has the power to identify that judge.

Hmm that is odd. I suppose it might be your monitor (or it might be mine :)). If you get a chance maybe login to PentaxForums from someone else's PC and have a look at your owl there. Or if you have a smartphone or tablet try with those?
Edit: actually I've just looked on my phone and it's less purple there (but still quite blue). On the other hand phone screens aren't known for their colour fidelity and cannot be adjusted or calibrated, I would have more faith in my monitor.

Susan won't know how many judges rated (she can count comments, but wont know how many judges rated the pic but left no comments) and she also won't know the lowest and highest scores as they aren't revealed when you receive your judgment.
My own opinion is that it's a good close up of an owl, enhanced by the reflection showing life in captivity. Although I do wonder why the darker feathers are purple?

I noticed today that an image has been retroactively inserted into the PEG. Can anyone explain why and how? PentaxForums Exclusive Gallery - Pentax User Photo Gallery
Halfway down the page, in the left column. You can see from the number of views that something odd is going on, it only has 10% as many views as all the other pictures on this page.
Edit: make that two, this one has just appeared as well - link |

Oh it was nothing requiring special planning, I just took it through the passenger window on a 747. The original was extremely flat due to haze and the cloudy (plastic) window so this has had a large (huge, really) levels adjustment.

That was the only criticism, the other comments were just praise (not that I mind praise!).
Thanks for the extra critique though! I think the dry river beds are the focus of the photo so not sure if I can wangle a square out of it. I guess I'll just let it go, thanks for looking at it.

Hello :) I've just had my first submission back with some comments, the main thrust of which seems to be that I resubmit it after straightening the horizon :hmm: This is the shot in question Gobi trails - Pentax User Photo Gallery.
I don't think this shot should have a straight horizon. What should I do now? Just write it off as a disagreement I'll never be able to resolve and move on? Thanks for advice. :)
