Mine happens to be little birds at the feeder as well! ;)

A gathering of 3 during corona time = NOT allowed. : ) (Oh my, I think it's been resized by the forum software.) Sorry, will try to replace it.

And a bit more off-topic: thank you very much for that link! A very interesting - and at times funny - read! I really enjoyed it!

Hahaha, uhm ... off the top of my head: no, not too many and even then you'd probably have to skip the last letter in pronunciation. I'll think about it for a bit though. ;) And don't get me started about writing national songs ...

I can't believe what you can do with that lens+camera combo, Des! Absolutely stunning pictures!

Thanks, Des!

Blackbird shot: No, I didn’t use a flash, and you’ve confirmed what I thought: that the focus was on the foot/breast rather than on the eye. (Sigma lens).

I tried to figure out how much the PLM was back-focusing, using the test chart I downloaded, a tripod, etc. etc. and followed all the instructions. I tested at the long end of the zoom (260-300mm) and took a couple of photos. I found it tricky to see how much exactly it wanted adjusting, but ended up setting a +2 adjustment and took a picture of another blackbird. I then of course forgot to change some other settings I’d been playing with, hahaha, but never mind that, I’m after correct focus now. So, this is the one I ended up with.

As to the two sparrow shots: the photos were both taken with the KP,
The 1st one with the PLM at 300mm - f/6,3, 1/160, ISO 1600 at 8 PM
The 2nd one with the Sigma 70-200-f/2.8 at 180mm - f/5,6, 1/1000, ISO 800 at ~4 PM

The light wasn’t very good for the first one, but next time I’ll try to up the shutter speed a bit more and just see what the results are. Hopefully the focus adjustment is going to help as well.

Thanks a lot for all your help and insights, Des! I’m sure I’ll look at them time and again!

And thank you again as well, Bob! Yes, I love the continuous learning, too, although all the settings and options are a bit daunting from time to time. But getting better at it is stimulating and makes you want more and even better. 😊 I’m glad you’re enjoying it so much and I’m sure we’ll see many more of the lovely pictures you take!

To everybody else: sorry for chatting so much on this picture thread. I’ll stop now and make place for more delightful photos! Thank you for not moaning! ;)

Hi Des,

Thank you very much! I so appreciate you taking the time to have a good look at my pictures and giving advice from your wealth of experience!

Arrrghhh – the dreaded front and back focus. I’m not technical at all and have no testing equipment., nor am I willing (yet) to shell out serious money to buy any at the moment. I have, however, printed out a test chart. 😉 I can see what you mean by possible front and back focus, especially in the first picture.

As to your remarks:

1. Yes, both pictures are heavily cropped and I was using the viewfinder.
2. I’ll have another/closer look at the pics I’ve taken so far with the 55-300 + KP to see if I can discern any back- or front focusing and any consistency therein
3. My most used settings are spot focus and TAv.
4. And yes, I’ll take some more pictures with the KP-PLM combo and try to be more aware of possible misfocusing, motion blur or movement (e.g. use a tripod every now and then).
5. If the problem persists, I’ll bite the bullet and do the charting. I’m sure my better half (who’s far better at these things), will be willing to help.
6. Regarding the second picture: I agree that this one looks slightly better (I’ve always loved the Sigma for its fast focusing and the sharp pictures it delivered on my previous cameras). Moving the camera closer to the feeder would be a bit tricky for various reasons, and TBH I’m not a fan of using either a tripod or LV, but I realize I may have to a few times to work this out.

One last question: would you please have a look at this picture and tell me if you see any signs of front or back focusing? It was also taken with the KP+55-300 PLM with the following settings: 300mm @ f/6.3 – 1/160 – ISO 800. The bird was about 3-4 meters away from me and what also helps of course is that it’s a bit bigger than the tiny sparrows. 😉

Thanks again, Des, I’ve taken all your suggestions on board and am going to work my way through them. Wish me luck! 😉

And thank you very much as well, Bob! I know that the 2 lenses I used here will never outperform that terrific 150-450 of yours, but as Des proves, I must be able to do better with the 55-300. All suggestions help! So, to make sure I understand properly: you’re using the Tv setting? Nowadays I mostly use TAv, but looking at the previous 2 pictures I realize I may have set the shutter speed too low for the first one (1/160). The second one was shot at 1/1000 – would you say that’s high enough for these little flitting creatures?

Cheers!

That must be it, proximity! At least, I hope so. ;)

I tried to emulate your settings, using the KP + 55-300 PLM, but no way did I get anything like your result. :( The big difference being the distance ~7 meters. Oh, and I haven't got DxO.

This first one was taken last night with the 55-300, the second one this afternoon with a Sigma 70-200. See? Nothing like yours!

Ah, Des, you've put an idea into my head: I still have the first copy of the 55-300 (non-WR). I'll put that onto the KP next! I now also have the PLM version, but I want to try all the oldies as well. ;)

You're probably right about the 55-300 results being better, but sometimes it's just fun to try all sorts of things. ;)

That's a great picture of the robin! It's sooooo sharp! Did you use any special techniques to achieve this result?

For years I didn't do much with photography. I've got more time now and I'm - sort of - rediscovering how much fun it is. As I've recently acquired the Pentax KP and want to try all my lenses again, I picked one of my faithful, old lenses today: the Tamron 18-250 f/3.5/6.3. Not very fast, but it served me well when I was suffering from RSI-like problems years ago as it's very lightweight. When the RSI problems went away, the lens was put away. Today I used it on the KP paired with the TC 1.4 and I was quite pleased with the results. Not only did it focus fast (nearly) every time, but I think the photos are quite pleasing as well. What do you think?

Thanks to both of you, @taks and @normhead. To be honest I usually have my EV set for -/- 0.3 because I was told that shadows/dark areas hold more detail than light areas.

I'm going to copy your answers and re-read them and try. Pffff, there's so much I still have to learn!

Thanks again!

That's a gorgeous picture! Would you mind sharing some info about it? Like: which TC did you use? Did you have to do a lot of noise reduction afterwards and if so, which software did you use to do so? I have the K3, the FA* 300 f/4.5 (which is of course a stop slower than yours) and various TCs, and I usually find that there's quite a bit of noise in the resulting picture. :( Should you be willing to share, thanks in advance, Taks!

A wood pigeon touching down for a brief visit. I took the picture from behind a fly curtain which made it difficult to focus. Still, I think h/she came out reasonably well.

Can't wait to see and hear this bird again.

Strange times here in the Netherlands. Far reaching measures because of the corona virus: everybody has been asked to work at home if possible (except people working in healthcare), all sports events have been cancelled, a number of museums have closed, no gatherings of more than 100 people, churches and mosques have cancelled services, and we've been told not to visit elderly people etc. etc.
Universities and colleges are teaching online, but schools are to remain open for the time being unless absolutely impossible (sick teachers, people who keep their children at home resulting in half-empty classes). All this till 31 March at least.

I've never ever experienced anything like this. It's unsettling, scary even. :((
