I got myself a Tamron 24-70mm (version 1) - took a while to get used to the heft of it, but I like it a lot. |

Thanks for that! I think the 85/1.8G would actually be the way to go. It's been one of the most impressive lenses on this thread and that's a great example. I have recently got hold of a 35/2 which feels like a natural focal length for my use, and the 85 would probably complement it better.

I had to send the 50/1.8D used in my initial test shots back - the focus ring kept sticking in manual focus. Looking at the bokeh in my shots, it's not exactly smooth. Looking at it makes me feel like I'm going to get a migraine. I'm wondering if the 50/1.8G would be noticeably better.

Lovely serpentine curves leading into the composition.

A D600 landed with me today, and I rushed out to take pics of the dog with the 50/1.8D I also bought, to see what this 'FF shallow DOF' business was all about.
Yep. The DOF is definitely much shallower. And 50mm is more of a usable walkaround focal length. Now to take some more interesting pictures!

I really like the compo (and light) in the last shot, I think the telephoto works so much better with the subject matter.

They look pretty good to me, really like no.2!
As ever I am contemplating FF... it's always there in the back of my mind. Shot 2 demonstrates why I am interested. Would the Tamron 28-75mm and Nikon D700 make a sensible 'budget' starter kit? I would add a few primes as I go along, but the Tammy seems quite a reasonable replacement for my 17-50mm (on crop).

That first shot with the wind-bent reeds is wonderful.

Must say I'm increasingly tempted by FF but I would definitely need to go down the ultra low budget route. Would it be possible to pick up an older body and a small clutch of legacy/cheap but quality lenses for, lets say, less than double the cost of a new k5? I would like a decent wide angle, a fast 35 to 50 prime, a short zoom, and maybe a 135 or 200mm. Using Pentax glass with an adapter would be an advantage as I already have a 50/1.7, 135/2.5 and 75-150/4 I could conceivably use.
