How to deactivate SDM and allow for screw drive autofocus with DA* 16-50mm f/2.8

I may have missed it earlier in the thread, but is screwdrive faster on the DA*50-135. My SDM motor works fine, no concerns there, but the focus speed is just so bloody slow on all SDM lenses I own compared to screw drive. its caused me to miss shots :(
