Probably the same purpose on both, the only difference would be the name on the lens. We don't even know what was the specification planned for "DA* 18-85", so it's all speculation.
What different purpose would a HD DA 50-135/2.8 AW fill, if it's only a slightly re-designed SMC DA* 50-135/2.8 with new coating?

My guess is that DA* will be replace by DA AW (just like on HD DA 560/5.6 AW) and have same specification as DA*.
Using a "star" in a product name in not very smart from a marketing POV, and they already removed it on cameras long ago.
AW (all wather) acronym can also be used on other products than lenses (FI new flashes).
