From Feb thru April, they were here in non-breeding plumage. I've not yet to see one in breeding plumage.

If you told me that and asked me which bird it was, I would never know. They act so differently here. I've seen them perched 3 feet off of the ground singing away.
Different shot of the same bird I posted previously: |

That's the only way I can get close to Scissor-Tailed Flycatchers. If I am on foot, they see me from a distance, and just move a little further away, keeping a pretty big gap between us. |

It's a different story here. Probably because I am on the coast, catching them as their coming in during migration, and they're more concerned with food and rest than humans. That's my guess at least. Last year, we had a large group of Hooded Warblers come in, and they were so tired that they were sitting down on the ground right at our feet.

Interesting. I only see them during the Spring migration, and they are usually at ground level, or a few feet up from there looking for food. If ever you have the chance, you need to see their blue color just as the sun is going down. It really stands out.

The alligator was getting some sleep just before the rain hit.
Found this Purple Gallinule while making my way back to the car during the rain. |

Thank you. I've been busy with other projects. I still browse here, just haven't made any posts. I still shoot regularly, just haven't uploaded much at all. With the Penta-sonic, I wanted to get into wildlife video, and a friend convinced me with her Panasonic. When I learned that I could use all of my Pentax lenses and my Pentax batteries on the body, I was sold.

Here's a male Least Bittern that I got last year from the car. It's a very heavy crop, but was the first time I had found one. I knew if I got out of the car to get closer, it would run away.
...and one more of the female from my previous post.
.....and a female grackle that decided to eat right in front of me while I was squatted down looking for a different bird.

This one was strange. It had no care in the world about how close you got to it or who was around it. There was another guy that layed down on the ground and inched his camera right up to it doing a very slow army crawl. The bird acted like he wasn't even there. At once point, a grackle bumped into the Bittern, and the Bittern didn't even budge.
The bird stayed in this ditch for a couple days and ate a lot of small crawfish.

I agree about the AF of the lens. I get more in focus BIF shots with the 150-450 than I do with the DA*300 (converted screw drive AF). I carry it by the tripod foot. It's sturdy enough to hold the weight of the camera by a 1/4" bolt, surely it can handle my fist wrapped around it. I find it to be more balanced when zoomed out to 450mm while carrying it by the tripod foot also.

A reminder to watch where you step while looking up in the trees for birds. I scanned the ground, took a step forward, and this water moccasin (venomous) slithered out from under my next foot step. It was so well camouflaged with the leaves that I almost overlooked it. I'd like to say that I am pretty good at spotting snakes, but I completely missed this one. I froze in place and my foot hovered over it as it moved out of the way. A close call, an eye-opener, and a first for me. I spent the rest of the trail looking for snakes.

Yesterday at the duck pond, I caught a lady hand feeding a Nutria Rat. I talked to her, and she said that she feeds him every day and that he likes salads, but today he got a treat of bread.

I went back yesterday to see if I could find any more alligators. Caught this one in the late afternoon / early evening. K3 - 150-450 at 330mm.
While walking along the trail, there was a couple that had two small children. The wife stopped me and asked me if I had seen anything further up the trail. I told her what I saw, and where-about to expect seeing it. While I was talking to her, the husband was eyeballing me up and down. From the way he was looking at me, I had a feeling he was going to say something stupid to assert his manliness in front of his woman, but he kept quiet. She told me thanks for the tip, I said good luck, and we went our separate ways.
A bit later, we all happened upon the gator above about the same time. I didn't say anything to them when I walked up, and just went to take my pictures. While I was shooting the pic above, she said "That's a nice camera". Before I could say thanks, the husband said "That's cheap junk, you can get that at walmart for 30 bucks, lets go" He grabbed her arm, and they started to walk away.
I could just tell from the way he was looking at me the first time, he had something stupid to say, but cheap junk? walmart? 30bucks? I actually questioned if I had heard what I did. I wanted to say something back to him, but knew it would only escalate things and I didn't want a broken camera. Plus, I was standing in between him and this alligator so I just let it go. I don't need to prove anything.

 The only thing this alligator cared about was getting some sun. I have another one of it shot at 270mm.
...and 150mm. Notice the way it's laying. It's in the worst position to attack or run away. It knew that I was too big to be a meal, so it likely would have ran away. If I got too close, it would have let me know by changing its position. Instead, it saw me and was falling asleep while I was shooting. The blood on its teeth makes me think that it had just eaten.
This next one, shot at 450mm, did not like me being near.
It swam towards me from a distance, and then kept raising its head out of the water growling and bellowing at me. Not wanting to cause it anymore stress, I shot my pics and moved on. |
