That's good to know. Here's a picture of mine with the later Japanese equivalent

I've also got a black H2, and to be honest I'm a little worried that these are fakes. I would have expected them to all be chrome since that is cheaper. Anyway, mine is 220413. If the serial number on yours is close to that then they are much more likely to be genuine since you would expect them to be done in one big batch.

I wouldn't call it a 1.5, it isn't really an intermediate model, just a variation. I have two model II 500/5 and they are both different and all three copies I have of the early Takumar 500/4.5 are different.

Ok, this is a fairly nerdy collector thing, but getting a pair of lenses with consecutive serial numbers is a really difficult thing to do. Usually it's because a pro or rich amateur bought multiple copies of a lens at one time and eventually sells them. In this case I happened to be looking for this specific lens and while comparing prices and condition of the eBay listings I noticed that these two lenses had consecutive numbers. The really unusual thing is that they were two separate listings, one from Japan and the other Australia.

A couple of Takumars, but not on Pentax cameras. Takumar 75/3.5 on Press Van strut folder and T-Takumar 75/3.5 on Minesix drop bed folder. Both cameras use 120 film, but the Press Van also had the option of 35mm with special reels (sadly missing on my camera) while the Minesix gave you the option of 6x4.5 or 6x6.

I don't think Schneider were ever happy with "convertible" lenses because there is a compromise in image quality when you use one half of the lens. I'm guessing that it was a popular selling point in the US so they went along with it for marketing purposes. The Symmar-s is also convertible, but when they tweaked it for optimum sharpness as a whole the performance of the individual cells was reduced so the "convertible" markings were dropped. Technically the plain Angulons are convertible too (as shown in the attached page from the 1934 brochure) although that wasn't mentioned much in later years

The 110s are lovely. They are the only two pieces of the 110 range I don't have. I've seen the Safari for sale but couldn't justify the price.

Schneider didn't really get back into volume production until mid 1946 - first with Radionars, followed by Xenars for Rollei and then the Retina-Xenon in June 1946. The first batches of Retina-Xenars appeared in September 1946.

All of that is taken from Hartmut Thiele's "Grosses Fabrikationsbuch - Schneider-Kreuznach Band 1" which is basically a transcription of Schneider's production lists between 1932 and 1954. Books II and III cover 1954-1976 and 1918-1932 respectively. It shows every lens Schneider produced listed by serial number (usually in batches) and the matching date.

A couple of new acquisitions - an Asahiflex IIa and an Asahi-Kogaku Takumar 500/5

The lens is interesting because it is different to the usual Asahi Opt. Co. Takumar 500/5 in that the aperture is quite close to the rear of the lens while the aperture on the AOC version is about a third of the way down the lens. As a result the lens barrel has also changed quite a lot. So there has been quite a bit of development between the two even if the optical arrangement (two elements) remained the same.

I've got three K2s and two K2DMDs and the numbers range from 703xxxx to 715xxxx. By comparison my KMs are 810xxxx, 813xxxx and 822xxxx and the KXs range from 825xxxx to 846xxxx. My lowest serial MG is a 719xxxx and I have an MZ5 with a 703xxxx serial that is just 500 numbers lower than the K2. Oh yes, I also have an M120/2.8 with a 703xxxx serial number. Trying to decipher Pentax serial numbers is an exercise in futility, the only relation is to other examples of the same item.

Ashaiflex IIb with matching Ashaiflex flash unit. I bought the camera on the weekend; the flash unit has been with me for much longer. It was nice to finally get a camera to display with the flash.

No, never tried it. Apart from being half frame it should give the same results as any other camera. That said, it would be challenging to use as the prism has a large spherical bulge on the bottom which distorts the view (but not the focus). Speeds are Auto and 1/4.

The Pentax MF, their only half frame SLR (strictly speaking it is a medical camera, meant to be used with endoscopes/gastroscopes and the like)

Yeah, maybe I'm an oddity amongst collectors in that I real don't need to own pristine versions of everything. Indeed, most of my K and M cameras are non-working pieces bought from KEH when they still sold the broken units from their website. The are only going to sit in a display case so they don't need to work. Still, I expected more competition because this is such a rare lens. Beggars can't be choosers when this stuff comes around.

I think next full moon I might have to pop it on a tripod with the 67->K and K->Q adapters and see how it performs :)

eBay - where else? It is completely ridiculous (minimum focus distance of 35m!) and the postage was enormous but it was still cheaper than a 600/4 and on a par price-wise with it's 35mm counterparts, the 1000/11 reflex and 1000/8 SMC. I was surprised to get it having made what I thought was a lowball bid, but I guess either nobody else collects 6x7 gear or they were waiting for a pristine version with caps and case. I never envisaged owning one of these given their rarity, but when it came up I thought I would have a half-hearted crack at it and ended up the high bidder. Kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing so there aren't really any regrets even though it is a bit of a white elephant .

After a few shots which look more like high-end camera erotica than camera porn, here are a couple of shots at the Hustler end of the camera porn scale. Yeah, the models are getting on a bit and they're not exactly Miss Universe but they still have what it takes...

1000/8 Reflex Takumar for 6x7

and if that isn't big enough for you how about an old Kodak 8x10?

Kodak 1B with Cooke Portrait IIB "knuckler".
