The photos from the Zeiss certainly look better than those from the FA35. But neither one is a dog. That's why I think the nearly identical DA35/2.4 is still a good option.
I'd say the Zeiss has more traditional rendering than the FA31, however. Which could be either good or bad, depending on what you want.

You need to decide which lens renders the images the way you prefer. So keep looking at photos from the lenses. The PPG is still my favorite site for this.
This is a good place to save money. The DA35/2.4 is actually quite good. Great wide open. As good or better than the FA35 that preceded it. I'd even pick it over the Sigma 35/1.4, but this is where personal preference comes in.
I think the FA31 is unquestionably the "best" lens here, but it's also the most unique. So you have to be ready to deal with its unique rendering characteristics. When it's impossible to tell exactly where nearby objects transition from being In-Focus to Out-Of-Focus, your images don't look the same. Want a lens that's nearly the opposite? Try the FA*24 - the most abrupt transition to OOF I've seen.
The FA31 is the only lens you're considering that's a modern classic. But you don't have to like it - really!
I own or have owned all the Pentax lenses I've mentioned.
