Lighting is the most important thing.
I have a TON of different lighting setups - they are my secret weapon!
Want me to come to NZ and give you some training?

Where do you do your animated titles?
Assuming After Effects?

Yep. After Effects.

Thoughts for lenses/aperture (on K-3) on something like this sit down interview?
Assuming aperture to ensure subject is all in focus is more important for a corporate piece like this, where the background is not as isolated as it could be, but at least you've got the shot?

While I'd love to shoot at something less than f/4, f/4 seems to be the sweet-spot when dealing with something that moves a little in and out of a shot.
It's rare that I can get someone to "sit still" for a bokehlicious shot of something shallower than f/4. On the K3 (APS-C) I love the DA* 16-50 and on the K1, the DFA 24-70.

This was the Pentax DA* 16-50 on a Sony A6500 -

Ideas for LED use? Diffusion/matching with daylight etc?

I like to use Fiilex lights - specifically the P360 with softboxes - Fiilex LED Lights - P360

Sweeeeeeet! :)

---------- Post added 02-15-17 at 11:10 PM ----------

Ok, so the shoot today went fine, normal, the usual...and what seems to happen all the time...also happened. At the end of the filming, what did they want? They wanted me to photograph the group and all the people that spoke for the day. So there I was, the K1 was ready since it was being used for video! It was nothing to switch it into photography mode, and since everything was level and I had big glass already on the camera...voila!

Studio quality photographs from the riser in the back of the auditorium.

THAT is why I shoot with a dSLR alongside my professional video gear.
The expectation is that if I am a true pro, then photography is part of the gig.

And most of the time, I have to do photography as part of my video, and video, as part of my photography.

Cool. I will actually be in Vegas about 2 weeks earlier working one of our yearly conferences. I doubt I will ever make it out of Mandalay Bay!!!

I might swing back through for NAB as I think I will be picking up a switcher like you mention.

As for this gig, it's an internal piece - highly confidential - and I am essentially recording things for mixing later. Having a dSLR pick up b-roll and if necessary, jump to photography duties is paramount.

Yep.

Now I am transitioning from a Zoom H6 to a Zoom F4 for exactly that kind of workflow.
I needed a more sophisticated method of PFL (Pre/Fade Listen) and both XLR out and mini-jack.

I got my Zoom F4 along with the FRC-8/F-Control board yesterday.

I've been up reading through it, and for about the same price as I paid for my H6, the F4 takes it to another level.

I have a high profile shoot on Tuesday, so I need to work the kinks out this weekend.

(and the K1 along with the FS7 will be there!)

Cool.

Most folks recommend XLR mics and such because it's a "Balanced" method that decreases the noise. XLR also has positive locking mechanisms and is a "standard".

Mini jacks, are not balanced, and most dSLRs need some kind of pre-amp. However, mic technology has improved to compensate. Like Pentax not being respected, mic manufacturers used to ignore providing mini jacks as a recording connector, but mini jack mics broke through and have become accepted. Besides, dSLR video is now a viable standard, so we get mini jack mics that are pretty awesome to go with our cameras.

As for mixing all the audio, that is soooooo easy now with Adobe Premiere.
I used to do it the "old way" with markers, timecodes, clappers and audio waveforms.

Scratch tracks are your friend, don't worry about getting perfect recording from your dSLR. It will never be as good as what you get with an external recorder.

Like the cameras I have...I have a ton of mics.

Most of the time I go for a wireless mic because of the localized pattern, my favorites are the Sony UWP series (last generation). On the FS7, I leave an NTG-2 with a dead cat on input 1. On the K1 I usually put nothing (it records in stereo!) or either a Audio Technica Pro-24cm or my latest fave the Rode VideoMicro which I LOVE.

Most of the time, I record a "Back bone" audio track on a Zoom H6, and sync all the scratch tracks from the cameras to that.
Soon, I will transition to a Zoom F4 (Friday) since I now need an XLR passthrough.

Audio is another whole bunch of variables...and another whole set of things to work with.

I had to bring up that project again to remember.

Straight on shots are the FS7, side shots are the K1.

The FS7 is at 4K/60p with minor grading, without a LUT in Premiere, so that tells you how wonderful the color is from the K1...at least in certain situations obviously.

When it comes to video editing, so much depends on the story you are trying to tell.
I watched your video, I like parts of it, and I can see you're putting in techniques and exploring - which are perfect when making the transition to cinema/video.

I would be a fool to make direct commentary on your video above, as it's clear you are experimenting. Bravo.

However, if I had sent you out to make a piece for general public consumption, and I wanted to suggest an emotion or mood, I would try and get you to think back to your photography. Think about how light and framing make great images, and then take those techniques and apply them to what you want to capture in video.

Imagine the "B" roll you are going to construct around your main footage. Tell your story and shoot the video in your head (or make a little story board) and then go out and shoot it.

The great thing about video, is the order that you capture it (aside from news reporting) does not matter.

Sometimes its fun to go out and shoot, and find the story after.
Sometimes its just about eye candy.

I have a famous friend (he doesn't have much time to really get to know me, but at least he knows my name when we are around common friends, and he does make a Facebook comment now and then, so I know, he knows I exist) who sometimes just goes out and shoots, does some grading, and puts together something that has peaceful visuals.

His last name rhymes with Groom.

Pip Groom (as I will call him) has a following, and people like to emulate his style and visuals. To that, I say create something that is unique, and follow your own personal aesthetic when it comes to cinematography.

So in that last comment are my recommendations in your editing.

Any dSLR is better than a camera phone..why?

1) Better dynamic range
2) K1 is awesome for video in the regard that it's a FF camera, and f/1.4 is beautiful and shallow for cinema effects.
3) f-stop choices for what you are filming.
4) Lens choices.
5) Even the K-1 can do 720p/60 which is at least an "HD" format and on a 30p timeline you can get slow motion from it.
7) The K-Mount has a pretty liberal FFD (focal flange distance) so you can adapt lenses or use an m42 adapter.
8) The battery life of the K1/K3/K5/K7 is legendary
9) Weather sealed cinematography (and with the new flashes you get a weathersealed LED light!)
10) A photographic camera in your hand.
11) A cell phone doesn't usually have a tripod mount
12) K-1 has an awesome flippy-screen to monitor as well as HDMI out and stereo recording without a mic.

More if I think of them.

Yep, definite limitations, sure.
However, the way "poor Pentax video" is bantered around here, you'd think a Pentax video would be all about potato quality.
Before hitting Pentax limitations there is a TON of beautiful images that can come from a Pentax camera doing video.

---------- Post added 02-07-17 at 11:26 AM ----------

Yep. Exactly. It's almost impossible to ignore the E-Mount.
As for the FS7, it forms the backbone of what I do, and I'd be hard pressed to live without it. Truly a fantastic camera. Best workflow I have ever recommended or used.

Ok, so here is a quick piece - and this is the sort of thing I do day in and day out.

This is a Pentax K1 and a Sony FS7 footage where I alternate the camera.

You tell me how a K1/Pentax doesn't do video.

There is nothing wrong with using a Pentax for appropriate video.

(mic drop)

Honestly, all of my work ends up on the web in some form or another. The "mixing" requirements are pretty low. I'll never make a movie (female and a realist), or show my stuff to people that would really care to be honest. Maybe someday.

I am a 100%, bonafide working professional, that grinds through multiple projects day in and day out. I have lost track of how many/much work I have done over the last several years.

Even if a Pentax came with a decent codec and more options, I would still have my others cameras to do what they do. Pentax has been, and will always be one of those video tools.

My FS7 loadout is around $20k which isn't even touching RED category or work flows. A RED workflow requires SO much more cash and overhead. Beautiful cameras, just no way I or the company can afford that workflow. It would be cool to use a RED but I have never actually touched one.

It's funny, but many of my professional friends use REDs and ARRIs, but I have never been around them when they are working!

So the FS7 and a6500 - HUGE difference in cameras obviously - but the same eMount is great, and menus are similar enough. XAVC in both cameras are a bit different because of the profile (S or I) and bitrate choice you get in the FS7. However, since I just added the a6500 to the toolset, I am still experimenting.

Anyway - in my demo reel you can see how all those cameras have been used, and of course you'd also find my Vimeo channel too.

Ultimately its all about the tool, and having more tools is always better.

Link to my demo reel is not showing below

Lets see...what do I use for video.

K1 - 1080p/30 for people sitting, in well lit places where I might have to also have to do photography, or where I need weather proof video.
Sony FS7 for 95% of my professional work
Sony a6500 for some work on one of those little gimbals
DJI - P3P for most of my drone work 1080p/60
GoPro - when I want to put a camera anywhere
K3 - when I want to set up multiple cameras for a shoot (3 or 4 camera setup)
Canon Vixia H something - when people want to borrow a video camera.
DJI Osmo when I want a small gimbal camera

I think that about covers it.
