Does the lens actually expose at f1.7, or is the ability of modern bodies to read it as f1.8 compromised?
Reminds me of the time I tried to shoot a hummingbird with the A* 300mm f4 and had to back up! There was not much detail to see after that.
I sometimes use the Pentax helicoid extension tube on that 300mm because of the MFD. You might try a tube on that 135mm when MFD is an issue.

This is our last Clematis of Autumn.This is minimum focus distance. The depth of field at max aperture is ridiculously
thin, as you can see from the crop. If I had an iris in focus on the model above, the eyelashes would be OOF.
This is wide open, handheld, with exposure compensation a stop down because of the clematis' bright center. K1&A* Last Celmatis of Autumn
