Thanks, Steve, that is helpful. Yes, I had reviewed the link earlier, but thought it included SMC and non-SMC lenses, so wasn't sure if that is a make-break deal for some. The lens for sale is not a zebra version, and appears to be the 1960 version, similar to the 3rd photo (1st line) in the PF lens database/review. I gues, for the price, the zoom is just there for some fun factor, zoo trips, etc.
Thanks, Pacerr. I have found the Bayonet 135mm 2.5 a little tough to use from the focussing point of view. Some images I have from that lens are just surprisingly good. I have a split-focussing screen, and that helps a hige deal. In low light, though, it can still prove a challenge. I think the next thing I will get will be the viewfinder magnifier. SMC or no-SMC is something I am getting used to, as the 135 I mentioned is my first non-SMC lens. Like you say, it really is not such an issue, as long as you don't shoot into the light. That seems easy enough for me to do most of the time.
I appreciate your suggestions and perspectives. I'll take a look at the lenses this week, and these will be my first M42 lenses. So I see a lot more learning in the near future. I welcome any further thoughts and ideas...

I am quoting my question again, as it seems to have slipped by. Here goes:
"How much of a difference is there between the Auto Takumar 55/1.8 lens that does not state "SMC" v/s one that is an SMC lens? I am getting one (M42) with another Vivitar as a pair (Kiron made 80-205mm/3.8) with a "Tele-Plus" item (I believe this is a teleconverter) - all for $50. I just don't know about this particular lens. I already have an SMC M50/1.7."
Anybody have any thoughts?
