This won't go down well over here but on occasions I do like food without meat... Just finished off an Indian stew with lentils and habanero peppers without removing the seeds. Hot stuff!

Ha, good one!:D And yes it did. Having the car near my camping spot meant the bottle of 18 years old Arran whiskey was also on hand!

You are very thorough in your preparations and you clearly grew up dealing with this stuff. I did not. I did have a complete outdoor set with me including food to travel on foot for at least twelve day's. Lack of ground clearance really was my biggest problem. Three years ago I started a hike from another part of this road and over there the road seemed fine. That peaked my curiosity and led to my little adventure. The truth is that I should have listened to the guy advising me not to go! Your advice not to rely on others telling me about the condition of the road and not to take chances is equally good and would have produces a better outcome too. The regular roads up north are not alway's that great either though.

I am a very small contributor to The Thread. But I noticed sometimes there is talk about cars. I have been told I have done something stupid with my car last month and to some extent I have been. My car is a VW mark 4 from 2001 with right now more than 527000 kilometers on it: more than 495.500 American miles. Rust is becoming a problem and it is leaking some oil. Most likely from the crankshaft I have been told. And I decided to go on holiday with it and travel from the north of the Netherlands to the north of Norway because I didn't want to fly there. That part of the plan worked out. My turbo quit working probably just before boarding the ferry to Helsinki. But having driven the Golf for rather a long time I figured it probably was an air hose feeding the turbo because I had trouble with that before. Near the Swedish border it was repaired for 30 euro's.

But then I did something really stupid by taking a dirt road to a river I wanted to fish. My best friend locally said it was possible. But he is 85 years old and probably does not have any recent experience with the road. Somebody else who has that experience said it could only be done with a 4x4 car or a SUV with front wheel drive. But my friend convinced me at least a part of the road shouldn't be a problem. So I started out up the mountains and it was slow going in first gear with some sketchy parts were rocks collided with the undercarriage. But I completed the part my friend should be possible. And then the really stupid part begins because I got a bit cocky and thought the last bit to the river should then be possible too...

I was mistaken. The road was horrible with one long part where the road had been turned in a stream with only rocks remaining. And now way to turn around... I was going from left to right trying to avoid stuff that would have mauled my oil pan or exhaust using my wheels to drive over those parts; mostly rocks. The goal was getting to the beginning of the footpath after a bridge over the river. But when I reached the river and realized there were plenty of camping spots I realized I should stop driving. I stayed for three nights. There were lots of hunters about. One of them in an old 4x4 Toyota minivan told me with the road becoming worse every year and he probably wasn't able to come here next year.

One part of the road.

On my way down Norwegians were asking me if I was alright. I thanked them and told them I had enough food and all the means to get of the mountain. The car was a different story. It took me two hours to drive the 16 kilometer back to the main road. And that is my story as a stupid tourist from a country without rocks and mountains.

The car in the wilderness...

It perhaps is a testament to the longevity of linguistic roots that when we use languages or dialects with strong historic roots we are able to communicate with a broader set of people.🙂

I can read Norwegian pretty well; enough to have an understanding but to understand spoken Norwegian I really have to be in the country for a longer time and even then it never reaches that level of understanding. What does not help is that there are rather a lot of regional dialects.;)

The fact that we are rather quick to switch to English is the result of four things: 1. Dutch is a small language so in order to make our self understood outside our small country we are used to switch to English or German and French. Although English is by far the most popular choice when we choose a foreign language to learn. 2. Education! Our education system is not world class but good enough to enable us to learn a foreign language. 3. We are a trading nation and thus are dependent to a rather large extend on our ability to communicate with foreigners and have been for a long time. For example the village where I grew up we learned that we used to have special mooring rights for our ships trading eels at the Londen Tower Bridge that we earned because of our help with the big fire of 1666. It is very debatable if that is correct but it does illustrate my point to some extend. 4. We have been an independent nation for some time. Your fight for freedom has been fought a long time ago. We have had more power than we deserved trough having large colonies and the (slave) trade associated with that. This and our past policy to welcome foreigners prosecuted in their own country like jews from southern Europe or the Protestants from France ensured that our culture has been influenced from lots of sources. Because of that for a long time we had a rather relaxed feeling of national pride with football as a notable exception. Because of that we don't have a problem 'abandoning' our language in order to communicate. (Did you know that my province was the first to recognize the US:Frisia Leads the Way in Recognizing U.S. Independence - History Is Fun?)

In contrast Norway is a young nation with very old bones and expressing your culture and language is still a relative new thing. Norway is a very patriotic nation and even as a regular visitor there is considerable pressure on and appreciation for foreigners to learn the language. But I could be wrong.;) Sorry for the longwinded answer!

Yep, the Afrikaners are a bit like long lost cousins. We established a post in South Africa to supply our ships on their way to and from Indonesia:Dutch Cape Colony - Wikipedia
It has been a rather complicated relationship though...

That picture likely is from a recent incident near the Dutch town of Maastricht where a Boeing 747-400 had trouble with one of it's engines. A report in Dutch:

Thanks for that! I remember we wanted to board the M/S Bitihorn but it was already full with excited schoolchildren. So we started hiking from Gjende expecting to take the ferry back. However... Our Norwegian language skills failed us in a big way because our interpretation of the timetable was way of. There was no ferry to take us back. So wy walked along the lake with heavy feet... I remember my mother and sister being visibly shaken by the drop offs on both sides of Besseggen.

I still have some hope that I'll be able to visit Northern Norway in September...

My condolences Charlie. Just today I went to a memorial service for the wife of one of my nephews. She died in a traffic accident. I wish you and your loved ones the same sort of farewell she received; the blanket of overall sadness was lifted more than on one occasion by also celebrating here life in a very touching way with a hint of humor.

In the early years of my hiking adventures in Norway I encountered a Norwegian fellow who offered to add a clear liquid to my coffee. I asked what was in that bottle. “Ten percent water”, he replied! He made it himself...

It is called Zeeland. Look in the left corner below on the map:

---------- Post added 09-10-19 at 10:22 AM ----------

Yep, I think I've learned about it at history lessons at school. The stuff about the Fries came to me in a more natural way.

We use to be good at exploring and having colonies; altough the inhabitans of most of those colonies at some point had a rather strong difference of opinion about that. New York use to be ours! Then our moral compass was a bit more calibrated towards towards a profit before anything else attitude...🤔

You have been closer to Zeeland for a couple of weeks recently; I was in Finnmark. The northernmost 'fylke' of Norway.

Dave, you are right! We had some sailors who were in the habit of stumbeling on new land yet not known to us Europeans and Abel Tasman was one of them. More here:

Dutch actually!:) But every summer I become sort of a Norwegian; the smelly kind that kills mosquitos in the mountains, carries a big backpack and a fly fishing rod. With cool beer more than a day's hiking away...

No, my house smells of burned bacon... I had some really thick slaps and wanted to crisp them up and lost track of the time. I guess that makes me a bacon burner...
