Frustrated at Not Getting Better

This is so true! We shot an interview with an older well-known artist and my reporter asked him if he was ever totally satisfied with his work. He said that most times he would keep working on his paintings until he just got tired of messing with them, but there were always things he thought he could do better. He said he thought every artist needed someone standing behind them with a stick to hit them on the hands and say, "Stop...that's good enough!"

I think you may be expecting too much, too soon. One year really isn't that long to be working at it. Getting better at anything is always an ongoing process. It's a bit like driving to a destination. If we're frustrated because obstacles keep blocking our way and slowing our progress, that's one thing. But if we're frustrated simply because it's taking a long time to get where we want to go, perhaps we underestimated how long the journey was in the first place. That said, I think it's a very good thing to be somewhat dissatisfied with our pics because it means we recognize there's room for growth...and it will help motivate us to keep moving forward. It's normal to experience plateaus in our learning experiences. We make great progress at first, but as we progress in our learning, the amount of growth between plateaus will grow smaller and the plateaus will last longer. So...don't be discouraged. Keep learning...keep studying...keep shooting...and be content in knowing that where you are now is not where you will end up.
