The petroglyphs (rock carvings) are actually etched or pecked into the stone. They definitely last longer than the pictographs (paintings) which are an iron oxide ground down to a powder and mixed with a binder such as egg yolks, water or even urine. There is even a negative effect where you put the paint in your mouth, place your hand on the wall and spray the paint around your hand leaving a negative effect.

Thanks Cliff. Most anasazi were at the most 5'6" so these are probably adult size. I have seen kids and they are real small. Here is another one, this time painted

I have always marvelled at ancient handprints. These are Anasazi from southeast Utah with my wife's hand for comparison.
