knoxploration, the fact that OEM recalls do happen point to there a just discovered issue, or a potential or known fault in the product. To what degree, whether it is a minor or major issue is always debatable but companies do err on side of caution.

My own experience with a battery recall is that it is a one-for-one exchange for a replacement but the question is still open whether the company is liable for warranty claims arising from use of the problematic battery. It isn't automatic as far as I can tell even for an original battery, and I don't assume it to be so.

Pentax USA's Warranty Information states the following:
PENTAX products originally distributed by PENTAX Imaging Company, 600 12th Street, Suite 300, Golden, Colorado 80401, have a limited One-Year Warranty starting from the date of purchase. This limited warranty covers any defects in original factory materials and workmanship. If your PENTAX product malfunctions due to such a defect within this one-year period, PENTAX Imaging Company will repair it at no charge within a reasonable amount of time. This warranty does not cover any damage caused to the product, including, but not limited to: impact, moisture, liquid, sand, excessive temperature, battery leakage, chemical corrosion, mishandling, operation contrary to operating instructions, tampering, modification, or servicing by an unauthorized repair shop. PENTAX shall not be liable for any consequential or incidental damages, such as memory cards, batteries, travel expenses, loss of time, etc. This warranty only applies to PENTAX photographic equipment originally distributed in the United States by PENTAX Imaging Company, 600 12th Street, Suite 300, Golden, Colorado 80401.

I based my comparisons against my 2 original K-7 batteries, just shooting normally like anyone else and determining the approximate number of shots between charges. It is not based on gut feeling nor am I doing a benchmark torture test. I can leave the latter to review sites or some enterprising individual.

We all use our cameras differently (use of LV, chimping and reviewing images, flash use, video, AF, ambient temperature) which can all affect battery life.
I merely said the 3rd party battery gave me more shots that's all. How much more I can't put a definite percentage to. Perhaps you can buy one yourself and test to settle your doubts.

Where I am in Singapore, warranty for the the Pentax product covers malfunctions arising from defects in original factory materials and workmanship. The warranty does not cover any damage caused to the product, including, but not limited to battery leakages/failures as well as consequential or incidental damages arising. I'm pretty certain the same applies to other geographical regions, USA included.

This being the case, I am not entirely certain that a battery failure (whether OEM or aftermarket) or resultant damage if any, to the camera is covered by the terms of the warranty. Certainly there is no warranty card that comes specific to the original Pentax battery. So it is not an open and shut case that even using original Pentax batteries will guarantee that you get warranty cover if by our uber extreme possibility that the batteries overheat and causes the DSLR to catch fire.

Bottomline is to my understanding, battery failures aren't covered...

Well maybe they can or maybe they can't, but you don't have any proof to support what you say.

My experience leads me to the view that the distinction between original and aftermarket batteries is a narrow one. The question is one's personal comfort level in using 3rd party batteries. I say they are fine, but I won't go out of my way to convince others the supposed dangers whether real/imagined, proven/unproven about them.

That 3500mAh battery does indeed deliver more shots than the Pentax D-LI90 battery. I look at the manufacturer's claims of battery life with a pinch of salt. I had quite a few original Pentax D-LI50 batteries when I used the K10D & K20D and 1 or 2 delivered nowhere near the battery life I was supposed to get. YMMV.

Well knoxploration, all I can say with certainty is that the 3rd party batteries that I use on my K-7 as a backup work fine. Original manufacturer batteries don't necessarily mean superior quality nor failure free.
I have had an original Sony Vaio laptop battery fail within a month of purchase. If not for the warranty, I would have been US$300 poorer. My Macbook had a battery recall, and the batteries were made by Sony.
My wife's original Blackberry battery also failed within 6 months. The 3rd party battery bundled free with it at the time of purchase still works fine.

Back to the topic, I was curious to find out how the eBay ones for the K-7 fared and bid for these from a China eBay seller last year. US$20 shipping inclusive all in. Smooth transaction, fast shipping, no dud battery issues thus far.

This one was given to me as a courtesy gift from a camera shop and is a common brand that is found in many camera stores where I am.
The 3500 mAh rating allows me to shoot a little over 1000 shots per charge. Again no issues.

You may say I am a sample size of one, but I can definitely attest that the other Pentax user friends who got the above battery with me at the same time from the camera shop have not indicated any issues thus far.
I dwell on the facts that I've experienced with 3rd part batteries first hand, not on conjecture.

I think we need less scare mongering with regards to use of third-party batteries.
I've used several third-party batteries on the K-7 and they are comparable to performance to the Pentax D-LI90 with no problems whatsoever.

Not defending Sakura but what's with the "shouting" and personal attack?
FYI unless you've explicitly registered your images, your images and that of everyone else's that are posted online risk be leeched by others, so no need for the childish histrionics on this forum.

I take the view that how others want to spend their money (regardless of the item's originality or authenticity) is their own business. So no need to preach about whether it illegal or contravenes the law or whatever. It's their personal choice.
There's a lot of 3rd party stuff nowadays, everything from car parts to printer inks. Who are we to say what you and I can buy. If there is any intellectual property infringement, let the lawyers handle it, no need to cloud up the issue here.
Something to ponder, why are people buying Induro/Benro or Giottos tripods or others which bear a very close resemblance to Gitzo. Could it be because Gitzo is quite a lot more expensive?
