I have the Sigma 70-200 and the DA* 300 and I have a history of shooting a lot of sports. I've kept the Sigma for low light sports, i.e. basically any outdoor sport where lights are necessary. The DA* 300 is quite a bit better from an IQ perspective, but I find that I need the 2.8 for sports under the lights. When my kids were young they didn't play under the lights, but as they grew older it became the norm. I'll probably keep the Sigma as long as I may be shooting sports under the lights or in indoor facilities where I can't get very close.
