Actually the air quality is excellent unless you're in the stratosphere (possibly higher). The colour in the sky long after the actual sunset is caused by the volcanic eruption in Tonga months ago, which blasted material into the upper atmosphere. :) There was a similar effect years ago after Mount Pinatubo erupted.

I just can't capture the actual colour in the sky with these sunsets. The white balance in the camera screws it up every time. :( The whole sky is colour, so the camera tries to make it white. :(

On the occasion I saw a sunset like this in Japan, it was smog from Tokyo. Glad to hear that you don't have fires! Floods aren't fun either. :(
