We salt the roads heavily here, and none of it has had any ill effect on my mostly-aluminum bike. I do keep things heavily lubed, though. But you're right, it's murder on the chain:
I'll probably be needing yet another new cassette soon. That's fine, it's a small price to pay for winter freedom :)

I'll never understand how anyone can stop biking just because there's snow and it's cold out... I need to bike all the time, it's what keeps me sane and happy. 3 feet of snow and -20c isn't going to stop me. |

it looks awesome, the only thing that gave it away to me as a model is the thickness of the spokes, but that's inevitable.

It counts fine!
(looks like a model to me)

I used to miss summer too, until I realized I didn't need summer to go biking.

Cool! I'll give that one a try. If it can handle 700g, then my 150g pocket video cam should be no problem (and should induce almost no vibration)
I'm not brave enough to try mounting my K-7 to my bike :) The pocket video cam cost less than $100, the K-7 cost more than $1100.

Hey that's really cool! I've been trying to find a simple way to attach my pocket video camera to my bike so I can record my rides. I see a lot of neat stuff when I'm riding in the woods, especially now in winter with all the snow.
I like your camera position, but the "thing" protruding above your handlebars gets in the way. I cut my head tube to keep it flush with the stem, but I guess everyone has different tastes for how they want their bike to look.
Must be nice to be able to ride so fast... my Kona Hoss isn't built for speed at all. I wish I could afford a road bike to go alongside my FR bike.
Right now, winter riding is taking its toll on my drivetrain: |

That's what I assumed too, but the pedal is on the inside of the frame. Where does one... sit? Unless it's somehow intended for a paraplegic, which I suppose is possible.

I'm not sure what this bizarre contraption is, but it kinda resembles a tricycle. I caught it while wandering in South Burlington, VT today.
It has a 7-speed cassette, a single-sided handlebar, a stem-mounted shifter, and a single-armed crank/pedal assembly at hand-level. Looks like it was cobbled together from a bunch of scrap department-store bike parts.
I'm still scratching my head... |

I used to think it was crazy, but now I think anyone who doesn't ride in the snow is crazy
I used to hate winter with a passion because I had no interest in winter sports. Now I look forward to winter every year because it brings variety to my mountain biking.

Dude, that's harsh. No bike should be abused like that :( Poor bike

This is my third one, completely custom built from scratch using a bare frame. I can only afford to own one bike at a time, so this one is getting severely abused, especially with all this snow :)

I just went through this whole thread, there are some great shots of bicycles :) But not nearly enough of winter cycling. So here's a couple more I just took yesterday:
That was after our first real snowfall. Today we got another foot of snow, with more on the way for tomorrow. This is gonna be a great cycling winter!
