But still marketing = cost.....
Every cent and penny spent in any company, be it marketing, be it paperclips, toiletpaper has to be paid. That penny and cent wil be taken from the money earned by products. Therefore any penny spent will rais the price of any product ever so slightly. Also marketing. Nothing is free. It may generate more profit in the end but that does not mean that marketing cost is not calculated in the price.

True.... It wont be lóng before I have convinced a professional photojournalist friend of mine that a K-5 with the 18-135 is the ideal "glove compartment" camera to have on hand when not lugging the pro kit around. (a true PJ always want a camera at hand..).
ActuallY I already had her convinced about a cheapo K20D or K-7 with DA*16-50 but when K-5 and especially the 18-125 were announced I have told her to put that decision on hold...

The more I shoot myself, the more I shoot shooters, the more doubts I have about this.... (And about "getting a hands on experience" in a store).
For the past year and a half I have made it a personal project to (try to) shoot eery wedding pro of a wedding at my work.
(see weddingshooters at work )

My conclusions are:
People who buy a dslr for the first time don't really care a out what pros use, they don't know it, they often don't even know what a "pro"is,
Theit choiceis mainly base on what they found on the internet and either buy from the internet or go to a store, severely biased by their own conclusions baed on their web research. Unless they are in doubt between two choices, te salesperson has little or no influence on the ultimate choice.

If they have NOT done a reseach they will go for any suggestion made by the salesperson. Even if they are allowed to hande a few models and like one better than the other, they go for "other" if the salesman says so. Salespersons sometimes do have knowledge but when I bought my Ds after careful research, I noticed that most don't and either tell you to talk to "the other guy in the store who knows best but who is on vacation for the next three weeks" or just sell you a rubbish story.

If people advance in skills and models, 1 in 10 stay to what he/she got as a first dslr.

Especially for first time buyers....
The make or breal thing is NOT the experience or holding the camera in your hand but the stories teh salesperson tells. And sometimes such a person knows his/her stuff but more often they are simply biased to what they use themselves or simply like or gives the more profit and very often , they just don't know anything , or at least they know less than what you can find on the interet.
