Things get kinda 'skinny' wide open Thors.Have 360B,60B not much different.
Very bright in viewfinder at F/2.8.Tend to use matte portion of screen in DSLR
and film bodies rather than split-prism,(those that have them). For final focus
confirmation and when time is available, split prism is very handy.
From first test roll from 360B about year ago. Kodak gold 200
with ZX-M and tamron 01F 2x TC. F/2.8 @ app. 1/500 from minimum focus distance.
Kinda surprised whole 1/2-16 set screw was in focus.

What I seen with stellarvue was profound.Very specific application though.
You and I both know how much of a pleasure it is to "run & gun" with M400/5.6.
Not applicable with scope, more a 'snipers rig' in application. Members Wildman
and Squire use rigs along those lines, put up some fantastic pics with them.

Congrats to Rvannatta on the score, everybody's looking forward to some pics.
Classic piece of timeless history.

"Sheeesh",that was quick.Hope someone has very understanding wife.

Had a glance at formula for super-tele apps. For wildlife pretty much agree.
A lot is dependant on how invasive photog is going to be regarding wildlife.
If photographs is only priority, with toltal disregard for common sense and
laws that govern protected spieces,200mm-300mm should be fine.
Was on a project last winter involving banded birds, getting numbers was
what it was all about. 300mm/2.8 with 2x TC ,400mm/5.6 with 1.4x TC
and 500/4 with 2x doubler were adaquate at best.Again, was about getting
information on bands so some individuals could correlate some very important data.
Spotting scopes with its prism and P&S attached, for digiscoping, speaks for itself.
Something rarely seen in states are high quality refracting telescopes with
extension tubes attached. Those with triplet grouping and having low dispersion
element are capable of producing outstanding images.Newer tubes made of
graphite, with app.500-800mm focal length and apeture around 80mm,with
speed of around F/6,weigh in neighborhood of 5 pounds.Magnification averages
around 175x at that size. Some of those go for around $800,with 2 year warranty standard.
Seen a stellarvue 80mm lomo triplet here at St.Louis astronomical club demo.Chap showed me what it could do.
Completely blew me away, filling APC frame at 100 meters with sparrow,no CA or purple fringing is mind boggling, and I seen it.
Can understand why some camera/lens manufactuers, their marketing people are worried.
They ought to be.

Hummers associated with nectar feeders in backyards.Birds are omnivores,
females require proteins especially, before and after brood comes off.
Caught this female with arboreal orb weaver gleaned from understory
with A400/5.6 & 1.4x L TC.Should have it on some 200 ektachrome through
tamron 360B and 01F 2x TC also,know when I run it.

No doudt those Sigma's are sharp, kind of surprising with what you had stacked.
You had to make it happen in the end, took great advantage of it.Dont Know
alot about Blue-throat,is seasonal movement way I understand. Not neccessiarily
continental such as seen with the storks you folks have.Beautiful bird for sure.

Had a short bit of good sunlight, had A400/5.6 and 1.4xL TC out for bit in backyard.
With our seasonal neotropical movement starting about now still trying to get some
ideals how we're going to setup this year.
Ruby-throat humming bird(female) Be awhile before they pull out, good practise while here.
All at app minimum focus 8.5 feet(2.8 meters),All manual
1-A400/5.6 + 1.4xL TC
2-A400/5.6 full sensor,
3-A400/5.6 crop of app. 75% sensor, fill flash with AF200T
.Sticking tongue out,changed nectar today.

Surprised somebody hasnt snatched up "A" 400/2.8 at KEH,a "BGN" at $2.7k
6 month warranty is best one is going to do on used piece.

Tried 360B today without extension,11 EV day not condusive to faster shutter speeds,
small apeture anyway.About 65% of sensor.From min. focus of 8.9 feet(app 2.4 meters)

From 8 feet(2.3 meters) This is male ruby throated hummingbird."husband" of female above with M400/5.6

Nice shot on the Kingfisher Gary, something always smells "fishy" to those things,
they're hard bird to get up on.

Been trying various extension tubes(lengths) on some different len's around here
to 'catalog' resulting magnification at particular distance and so on.
Ruby throated Hummingbirds make for very co-operative 'test-bench'
M400/5.6 with 78mm extension @ 8 feet (2.3 meters),had to use fill flash with AF200s
@ F/6.8

Hate to hear that Albert, guess if there's a bright spot at least her "pretty eyes"
arent hurt. See if I cant get a candle goin' for you and your gal.

As simple yet efficent a design that is,finding parts might be hardest part.
KEH might be good source for info.

Somewhere in east-central missouri lies a 77mm lens cap from M400/5.6
If you can find it,its yours

Was playing with high ISO on K20 this weekend. At 1250 its pointless unless
whole frame can be filled with subject. In this junk almost pointless to
wade, crawl, climb thru that stuff. Like Daves backyard & cooper's hawk

Marvelous shot on the heron Andy,Like it.

@Dan,have a 'bigger gun' than my A400/5.6 and a shorter,"fatter" one too.
As far as being able to travel 'lighty' with complete confidence in a lens,
that 'A' model is very hard to beat.Feel its fair to say about M400/5.6
also.Might seem a slight or oversight towards of other offerings, not at all.
After all,look at Andy's shot.
Be honest, not at all thrilled at taking 'fat guy' or 'the biggun' in my canoe,
should we all go down with the ship, know I could replace 'A' or 'M'.

All said, those copies have a utilitarian appeal all their own.

Tried a little water borne shooting this morning. 17 foot old town tripper canoe
in slough off mississippi river. Heat and time of year such as it is, the insect
hatches that the warblers are keying on and Im trying to shoot are coming off about a
half an hour before sunrise. Found out one way to stay cool in this heat
is to hold a few chunks of ice in arm-pits.Re-affirms my confidence in weather sealing.
Adds to belief that octopi have it easy.

All with K20,A400/5.6 + 1.4 XL TC

1-juvenile Black-crown night heron from about 5 meters
2-Green Heron
3-Juvenile great white egret(left),Green heron in stare down over territorial fishing rights.

Been working with a dot org that are in process of gathering data on effect
brood parasites have on other avian populations. In this case its
yellow-billed cukoos as the culprit(pic 1) and mostly warblers and vireos in
general and prothonotary warblers in particular here.Pic 2 is a female prothonotary
gathering nest material, shadow in foreground is stump with active nest.
With temperatures well into 90's at midnight and dew point close to 80
have to be very careful enviromentally tempering lens/sensor to conditions.
Was able to catch 2 males squabling at den with 5D II & 500/4 from about 18 feet.
Will soon be published by dot org for all to see.
If your looking for something worthwhile to do with your rigs, there are hundreds
other programs across U.S., Always looking for help.

1-K20,Tamron 360B,01F 2x TC (yellow-billed cukoo)
2-k20,A35-105/3.5...wait few weeks,show what males look like:D

Was able to copy a part at work for something with a point&shoot then
print on transparency stock for laser printer, superimposed on replacement part
as center punch template. worked out great and got me an 'ataboy'

Had the A*300/4 with AF1.7 out today, weighed 186 pounds in morning,
182 when I got home. Bit sticky out.

1-One of the empi's,willow flycatcher, stained from chlorophyll leaching into water.
2-Black-crowned night heron-the 'white balance bird'
3-Yellow-billed cukoo,gourging on catapillars

with this morning,all were impressed.

Was able to get out later on with A400/5.6.
Can see the need for polarizer on days like today.
Anybody use Polarizing Filter in rear filter drawer? for someting else, curious

2-Mature Black-crowned night heron
3-third generation monarch on milkweed, next makes legendary movement

Crop factor not mentioned at beginning, but by pentax own sales
literature stating"equivilent"lends some weight if not focal length to argument.

Isnt that summer day 3 months long up north Albert? Heard you folks had long days.

White tail doe about knock'd me off levee here. All the rain thats fallen in missouri
and mississippi river basins starting to show up,pushing deer away from rivers.
A little confused, she ran right at me,then disappered.Never realize how useful
BB sight on M400/5.6 is until you start shooting something else.
Through A400/5.6 which is about to have a BB glued to hood.

Probably #1 reason for reaching towards trash can icon on this end.Have one and dont
use it at times.Have both 'M' and 'A' 400/5.6's,both those lens 'carry' very well.
Wont say I would prefer them over faster, heavier glass in every application,
when economics are considered, both series shine.

Just a sidenote...If one cant drive 8 miles without getting winded, might want to
get to a doctor and have some other kind of pictures taken:D

over hill and dale is no problem even when carried in hand.

Seems overwhelming at times Des,interesting thing about English house sparrows
across contintent and to lesser extent E.T.S. mentioned. Both those birds were
intro'd towards end of era of horse drawn transportation, fodder was food supply.
Some folks estimate that if they had shown up 50 years earlier, things would of been
catastrophic.Great review on M400/5.6 BTW,your thoughts are perfect compliment
to whats already there.

Took the dog out for another rehab walk today, had A400/5.6 along, hard to get
close to anything tethered to a huskey.Caught this Dicksissel, shots nothing to
write home about. Brown shoulder patch is...its brown.Made a post above about 3 weeks ago
on same kind of bird and shoulder patch is deep rufus color, they're loosing pigment.
5 days past soltice and can detect change allready
