How to deactivate SDM and allow for screw drive autofocus with DA* 16-50mm f/2.8

It is safe as long as you do a backup of the original lens EEPROM. Once you have a backup, even if you were to make a small mistake, you could always revert back to the original and/or start over. I did it with 4 different lenses and honestly, it's extremely easy - it's basically a matter of reading the instruction and switching a few 0 for C sorta speak.

Also, for what it's worth, I'm assuming you were talking about your DA* 55mm 1.4 (rather than 50mm) - if so, I'm pretty sure that lens is SDM only (it doesn't have the screw drive mechanism), so it won't work for this one obviously.

And no, the SDM does not have to work in order for the procedure to work. The motor could actually probably be removed from the lens and the procedure would still work. OK, I would probably not actually try that :).
