Indeed, it's been a long dry season  since KNP with long lenses. But have gained some inspiration this past long weekend again.
Thanks for this advice. Light angle and exposure are tips I need to work on some time. Will be a challenge worth it some time as I am working with the less sharp and light hungry Sigma 170-500 while encouraging the wife into photography by letting her use the K3 and DA*300+DA-1.4x which is a very easy combination to work with.

Wow, you have really gotten that old legend to perform. I have achieved good sharpness out of my Tak SMC 500/4.5 (same optics), but nothing like you have achieved. Also normally a fair bit of CA as well. And a real monster to handle.
Really liked the Golden Eagles shots. Would like to know your "secrets"..!! ---------- Post added 08-12-16 at 07:48 PM ----------
Great shots Philip, and the perfect setup in kit. Very envious of that 560 sharpness at distance...!

Cape White-eye in the garden. A very twitchy bird that moves about deep in the foliage making it somewhat difficult to get them to pose. DA*300 on K3 with flash exposure.

Thanks Phillip, It's been a while since last flamingo photo sortie, but always a joy to see them so close as I drive that route everyday. And again sorry for missing you the other day due to my business trip at just the wrong time. ---------- Post added 05-01-15 at 07:08 PM ---------- And the best I managed of a Lesser Double Collared Sunbird, part of a troop that is frequenting my garden every day at the moment. First image on ground and wings raised is just awesome..! ---------- Post added 10-18-14 at 04:45 PM ----------
I don't have 150-500 but have DG 170-500 also the DA*300+DA-1.4xTC. By reputation I understand the 150-500 is slightly better than 170-500. But between the options, no comparison at long end. The 150-500 has to be used stopped down to at f/8 but better f/11 at 500mm to be approaching truely sharp. The DA*300 is razor sharp at f/4, and the TC does almost nothing to degrade IQ.
I don't know if 150-500 is similar to 170-500 which can be very sharp when really up close, but then falls away badly as subject distance increases ---------- Post added 10-18-14 at 05:11 PM ----------
Philip, Beautiful sharpness and detail. Did you get any more of Purple Crested Turaco? Looks like you light was a bit dull. They were all over when we were at Skukuza camp. Other trogs from overseas were going craze over them. I looked pewny with my DA*300x1.4 in amongst the Canikon 500-800s
I just needed a little more reach, but very happy with captures

Early morning opportunity with FA*600 (making hay before I have to send it on) K5__4603 by KevinR38, on Flickr K5__4605 by KevinR38, on Flickr K5__4525 by KevinR38, on Flickr ---------- Post added 10-12-14 at 12:02 PM ---------- FA*600/4 and some BIF
Now this was a little challenging, and keeper rate dropped to rock bottom. Just too much camera, lens and mount (+-20lbs) to track and pan, and the AF system tracking comes up a little short as well. Thanks for comments. I used a Manfrotto 434B monopod (similar to 681B). It has a U-3/8" and U-1/4" and large round mounting surface, so I screwed that straight onto the lens mount. To carry the lens I left most of the monopod down, and rested the front on my shoulder (which was padded with shoulder strap of my camera backpack.) I tried a mix of SR on and off when at the higher SS. I also tried to stabilize side-ways a bit more on something with the hand I used to hold the lens. Typically a post or fence.
Perhaps I made it sound too easy in my first post, but it was much more acceptable than I thought it would be. BIF was very difficult to track, and I only did a few hand-held. Arms and shoulder do take strain after a while.

And a few more from this very fine lens. (With thanks to user Johan Kruger who kindly let me use his new baby-lens.)
I was expecting it to be harder to handle given the 900mm equivalent FL, but apart from the shear weight when moving around, the lens was a dream on a heavy-duty monopod so long as I could steady a little on something else like the sill of the bird hide or a fence. The shear mass seemed to help with managing movement and vibration. Now you are just being greedy..:rolleyes: You already have a DA-560 and after a FA*600 as well. I need to put you in contact with buyer. I think he is in Joberg or Sasolburg. He is interested in DA-1.4xTC, and with all that long glass you should be able to do some useful sharing exchanges...:)

Not quite mine, but nearly..!! I was confronted in a dark ally by LBA when a FA*600 came up for sale right here in Cape Town. A handshake away from concluding a deal. Drool, drool, but then came to my senses while playing with it in the seller's garden. It was just too much lens for me (weight and investment level relative to my hobby needs and priorities).
So suggested he post it on enthusiast forums. The seller not being tech savvy, I offered to post a few links to start reaching a larger enthusiast market, and all but sold now to a local South African PF member. I got the seller and buyer in contact, and did a selection of checks and test shots for buyer who is near Johannesburg.
Was fun playing with this beast!! Maybe the buyer leaves it with me for a few weeks...

Some not the usual birding use of DA*300 at a 24hr dingy sailing event I was officiating at which runs through the night. First shot is 1/15s f/4 iso3200 of setting moon. Sky was almost completely dark still. Quite an experience for the sailors at night under a moonlite sky only.
