The Pentax MX has exposure measurement and does not have automatic exposure.
When using the MX on a tripod in low light below EV 4 with higher speed film, I suggest to first read the manual Page 22.
The green LED will not illuminate in some cases, even if the user selects a good exposure.

I have changed over to the Samigon plastic reels
One is shown at the front in this photo with the old gray plastic ones at the rear.
https://app.box.com/s/28pp1anl5lj87qdzzhw4gfus51vty31q

The Samigon ESA325 reels are of a slippery white plastic and are of similar dimensions, but weigh 50% more than the gray ones.

On each side are 2 pairs of larger tabs, forming a slot making it much easier to feed the film in.
Mine are still new, and so far the film catching /sticking problems are not occurring.
I still run a pencil "lead" around the spiral and balls, after drying and before each use.

Hi WP,
There are a few issues.
Firstly I am tending to use the Graflex cameras to try out multiple lenses.
That means the rangefinders are usually out of service.
(My 4x5 rf is for the 135mm, and my 2x3 rf is for the 103mm

Secondly so far I don't like to use a tripod and ground glass.
When the rangefinders are out of service, the only way to focus is with the bed scales ( On the 4x5 I have added a scale for use on the other lenses)
Here is a photo where I did use the tripod and ground glass, and tilt to bring the near by fence into focus.
https://app.box.com/s/71zle4bsq15813bwvbjf

The Graflex cameras and their lenses perform OK when used like that.

A final issue when using the cameras to try various lenses, is that the bed infinity stops are not in service.
So in discussion with Apug and Dan Fromm, I have made a "jigger" for the 2x3 that allows the front standard to be accurately paralleled at infinity.
These have been used for a long time, the one I made is adjustable for various lenses. I have yet to make a longer one to suit the 4x5.

Thanks for the interest in the old cameras!

The Speed Graphic 4x5 and the RB67 with the chimney each weigh about 2 kg (4 pound)
The prism for the RB weighs about 0.5 kg alone.

The Graflex 2x3 Baby (left) is the lightest at about 1.5 kg

I can't take sharp photos close in with the Graflex like I can with the RB67 slr - for family photos or close in like this photo:
https://app.box.com/s/yvp08s3w4bver2iwtva8t9mbt4tque71

For distance photos, the Graflexes are OK.

It is a Graflex "PhotoRecord" f/5 84 mm, and so it sits on the fixed rails.
I think it is going to work well from some test photos I already did on the RH-8 6x9 rollfilm back.
Regards !

Today I am trying a lens I just restored.
I rarely use a dark cloth.
But I needed one for a close up so I got out the 2012 black PentaxForums Tee shirt.

Hi Mike, I put a thread on Apug about the project along with some photos.
I had to make some parts in the lathe, but the old camera remains in its original condition.

Hi Mike,
It does the same job as the bed (rail) stops.
The jigger is adjusted initially after the front standard is set to infinity (or hyperfocal)
Then each time the lens is used, the jigger is set in place and the front standard is drawn out to contact it.

According to some of the guys on Apug, such jiggers were actually used, although I have yet to see a photo of one.
I just made it from their description.

The 2x3 century is capable of (limited) rise and tilt.
Here is its dof & vertical correction capability with the 103 mm Graftar:

This is my latest project, to add a wide angle to the "Baby" 2x3 Century.
The camera is from 1953 and is in very good condition.
The lens is from 1968 or so.
The lens board, the grip and the alignment "jigger" were made on my 1939 South Bend 9A lathe.

Yes, These two 1:2 50mm (Pentax and Rikenon) both have 6 ap blades.
Photo taken with Pentax K-01 with the XR Rikenon 1:3.5 28mm at iso 100, f/9.5, and 6 seconds, using the Pentax AF360 in M at 1/32 for fill.
I have to use that AF360 periodically because it is fairly complicated to set up, and I forget!

The XR Rikenon 1:3.5 28mm has only 5 blades.

The other porn item here is the Pioneer SX440, from about 1974 I think. It was from an Apug member.
I have a set of electrolytic capacitors ready for it but it is working very well with the originals.

The Canon FD 50mm 1:1.4 here has 8 ap blades, same as the Pentax and Ricoh 1:1.4 50mm lenses here.

This is my "new" vintage RB67, as used today with the Mamiya-Sekor C 1:3.8 f=90mm.

Last weekend I used the chimney finder which I found difficult, so this weekend I am trying the prism, and finding it easier.
This camera is very heavy with the prism on.

I fitted new bellows and foam to the body , and checked the shutter timing of this lens.
I have 2 more lenses to check before use.
It will take me a while to accumulate enough rolls to process, to see how the camera is performing.

I am not sure if AF080 works in the 50mm, with the closer macro distance. Perhaps somebody can answer.

For the smc Pentax-M Macro 1:4 100mm, I just took 2 test photos at 50mm and f/5.6 and here are the camera jpgs from the K-01.
There might be some reasons for the bad images reported from it.
Firstly , wear as you mention, The copy here is pristine and tight as a zoom needs to be. Old zooms tend to lose corner sharpness, in my experience, or get lopsided blur as they wear..
The build quality of the copy here is similar to all the other good -M lenses in the collection here.

Secondly, when not in "macro" the minimum focus distance is quite long, more than 1.2 metres.
That might lead users to think it is not sharp, indoor portraits etc.

The first photo was focussed on the dial needle. There is a bit of color fringe at the lamp, however the lamp is a bit over exposed.
The dial numbers are still fairly sharp at 100%
The fence test , second shows that this lens across the frame sharpness at 100% is as good or maybe better than the other old manual zooms I have here

It is an AF080 ring flash for the smc Pentax-M Macro 1:4 100mm.
It is TTL controlled, so needs an early dslr like Pentax ist, ist ds etc.
I also use mine in manual mode ( it has full or 1/4 setting) with the K-01

ps What is so bad about the Pentax -M 1:2.8 40 ~ 80mm zoom?
I have one it seems bright to focus and sharp enough.

I have seen other bad reports of that lens.

The eye cup for the dslrs fits the MX. I think it looks neat, and helps, also makes it easier to see the f/ window.
Happy photos with your new MX

Thanks Presto., I already have the Pentax Bellows M here which matches my -M collection.

I am reading that the Canon FD mount lenses are almost worthless as the adaptors to Canon dslrs need glass etc and the functionality is lost.
It is a pity , as the FD lenses are are in good condition. Anyway, I can use them on the A1 from time to time.
I will be interested to try to get that Canon MA drive with new cells as a future project.
(After I finish the RB67 restoration in progress here)

A thrift store Honeywell Pentax 3/21 Exposure Meter from the 1960's
It was not working and needs 2 obsolete batteries so I designed and built a small circuit board to allow it to run with one smoke alarm battery.

Calibrated against the Pentax K-01 and the Pentax MX
It is very nice to use. I am trying Ektar for first time tomorrow at outdoor birthday so it will get some use.

LaHo, Nice Nettar,
I have the 1936 model with a Nettar Anastigmat 1:6.3 f = 10,5 cm
It has the frame viewfinder also the little prism vf on the lens
A lot of the construction appears generic with your 1950's model but the lens is quite different
