Quiet among the Off-Branders?

Here is a test of the sturdy A-1 with a Koboron MC Zoom Macro 1:3.5~4.5 f=28~105mm

I had loaded the camera with Fuji 800 intending to do some low light, but ended up taking these in intense daylight and the grain is very evident in the blue sky.
The second photo at widest 28mm and f/22 has some perspective worries along with the sun doing something to the pole on the left.

The electric poles are not wired and the men in gray are only crash test dummies being rescued.

Ozunon
Small world, I am using mine on the K-01 today for the Opening Of The Presents.
This one is the 35~75 zoom at 35mm and stopped down to get some stars on the lights.
Ozunon, Magnon, Tou & Five Star were the badges these lenses had in various countries.
Actually this lens is a hybrid rebuilt, the rear half is from a smashed Magnon from New Zealand and the front half is from a USA Ozunon that must have been left under a candle, the rear elements were gooped in candle wax.

Hi Itod,
Yes, I agree with Matthew, "beyond.." something is amiss, especially in the lower left
of all your shots.
I have same lens, used all last summer for junior baseball, and we got many good shots.
Here are some test shots today at f/4.5 and f/8 for you to compare.
The f/8 might have a bit of shake.
This Makinon is a little off (?) on all corners, but uniformly:

In case you want to replace the Makinon, compare the SMC Pentax 200 4 which is available at reasonable price.:
Better (if I could only hold it still and expose it properly!):

Thank you, Steve,
Yes, I used Pentax and various off brand K on those Ricoh bodies in the day.
The Ricoh bodies were tough and small and basic, something like ME etc, and I suspect they came out of same design office.
I see the Rikenon XR 50/1.4 is at the high end price in off brand , but still a lot less than a Pentax 50/1.4
I will try to get a Rikenon XR for the collection, and to use generally while keeping the Pentax in the case.

Thanks again for the advice

I would like to inquire about the Rikenon XR 50mm 1.4
(the 1.7 is listed on our reviews)
One reason is I have 2 Ricoh KR bodies (late 1970's) in very good condition but no corresponding Ricoh lenses of that era.
I am about to regress to using them to shoot and process some b&W again!
Other reason is I have only one other 50mm under f2 (a P A 1.4)
and I just realized this is a useful dslr lens for night/winter use indoors.
Is the Rikenon XR 50mm f 1.4 of build quality like the SMC Pentax K lens or, of lighter duty and weight, like later Rikenon P series?
I have some Rikenon P series Zoom from late 1980's (pins removed). I read that the Rikenon P50mm 1.4 got high reviews in the day.
Can anybody who has an XR series let me know how the coatings have lasted over time?

thanks

Hi, SmurfinAus,
You can see alternative brand names for Magnon in my post about 5 above.
The "Toyo/Five Star" or "Tou/Five Start" is more common that "Ozunon".

Hi Voytech,
How is that 24 mm Makinon? I have 2 "$5" Makinons and they both work fine.I took lots of shots with the 200/4.5 last summer .
I have a "Magnon" 35~70,dropped and broke many years ago.
I found that this brand name may be localized to New Zealand and is same as "Ozunon" and "Toyo/Five star"
So I got a cheap Ozunon that had a destroyed coating on rear element.
Pulled them both apart and made a good one which seems to work rather well;
It is a one touch zoom with zoom by push pull and focus by rotation.
I also sliced up the wide rubber grip and used it to repair 2 other lenses that had deteriorated grips.

These off brand lenses are metal/wellbuilt/repairable. The Magnon seems to have lot less elements that the equivalent Pentax.
I took close ups at f5.6 to compare it with a PKA 50 mm and the difference *** jpg at 200 % zoom on Picassa was mostly just focus error.

This shot I tried to take with SMC 24/2.8, but was unable to get all that white lettering sharp enough across the frame.
So I stood on a chair with a SMC 55/2. at f8 ( Its me, not the lenses !)

I read through the off brand postings today- very interesting.
I collected Pentax since 1980. In 1992 I purchased in New Zealand a used "MC MAGNON AUTO ZOOM 1:3.5-4.8 35-75mm phi55 8500867"
This was a one touch zoom. I coupled it to a Ricoh KR-5 metal body. This was my daily camera from 1992 taking I suppose over 1000 shots using 400 ASA film and at times an AF16 flash till I dropped the camera in a steel mill in 1999 and damaged the white plastic spiral trunnion carriers for the one touch actuation. The lens still works fine and is not cosmetically or glass damaged but is not really usable because it jams occasionally. I have quite a collection of PK M and A and some off brand but I really miss that Magnon. I would like to ask if anybody knows where I could get a replacement Magnon or maybe a co-branded 35-75mm lens for parts. I think this brand name may have been short lived and limited to a few countries, after some searches.
