What I think is that was one "hot" fire! When you see trees burnt completely to the top like that, it means there was a hell of a lot heat in the fire front. Not a good place to fight it either.

Was the pick up abandoned due to the fire or earlier?

Before anyone thinks the reference to a "hot" fire is silly, please be aware that it is all relative.
