I'm not much more advanced than a beginner, and I find that with the DAL lenses, I do miss quickshift and the distance scale. In my experience, the 55-300 can hunt more in AF than say, the 50-200, so it's particularly nice to be able to manually "pre-focus" without having to set the MF/AF switch on the camera. Also, if you later decide to get a Raynox macro lens adapter, you'll likely appreciate quickshift there, too.
I had (and sold) my DAL50-200, and should I replace it at some point, it will definitely be with the DA version. But that's just me.... ;)
