I agree completely.
Thats why all my macro shots of bugs are of female such's.....

Yesterday I was out with my cat ( female) in the woods behind the house and I brought my fav SMCTak 85mm f1.8

I just love how that lens makes everything magic.
At least the 2 first are shot wide open.
I think I stopped down 1 or perhaps 2 steps on the last shot.
The second shot looks like a tiltshift or something.
What a lens!

Nice ones Porga and Mike!
Porgas last looks like a Microsoft commercial for the cam they havnt yet made, thank god...
Nice shot!

About my Tak 85mm f1.8 ....... the one I almost sold for a penny.

I get it.
I really do.
That lens wont ever leave my bag!
Yesterday I was thinking about selling it. Couldnt get a shot with it.
This morning I was checking the glass thinking something must be wrong and when I pushed the front element it suddenly gave in with a pop sound. It wasnt seated properly! I loosened it and gently tightened it back again. Easy fix and now it works very very nice. I took a bunch of photos today visiting a local cafe and I really like the result.
All shots are at f1.8 with no sharpening or other treatment except some WB adjusting on a few and Tone on some. As little as possible. Also LR standard sharpening when exported to 1024w sRGB JPEG.

Well. I focus thru the finder using a Katzeye or with the standard focus screen.
It looks to be in perfect focus both with the split screen ( Katzeye) or with the standard screen. I get focus confirmation, both the red square and the green light but the shot always has focus about 1-2cm infront.
If I focus using the Viewfinder focus ends up much closer to were I want it.

Its actually easyer to focus not using my Katzeye Split Screen so I removed it for now. Im going to ship this K5 back to get a new, spotfree copy so I needed to remove it anyways. Maybe the FF is all about my K5 and not about the lens but I have similar problems with many of my manual lenses but not all. Some are perfect like my Tamron SP 35-80. That one is always spot on while my Tam 28mm f2.5 is FF like crazy. Firmware 1.3 helped a lot but there are sstill differences between different lenses. I dont own any AF lenses so I cant really tell about those.

Anyways.
Here it is.

Hehe

Im getting to like this SMC Takumar 85mm f1.8 more and more but only after I realized it is front focusing a bit and that made me miss a lot. Now I can compensate for it but its hard. Lens adjustment in the K5 doesnt seem to do anything at all.
I found a link to a site were someone tested a bunch of 85mm 1.4 & 1.8s and his conclusion about this lens was exactly what I already noticed so that confirmed it. Nice to know its not my copy that has a problem.

I have yet to test it were I think it will lay the golden eggs. Portraits.
Not my thing really. Not at all.
I will try on a very reluctant friend later this afternoon.
She simply has to give in and let me shoot her face :)

I was hoping more of you guys would rant about how good or over rated this lens is. I have seen the reviews and the crazy prices on ebay so there has to be something to this Tak 85mm that Im still missing. Maybe I will be enlightened this afternoon. Still havnt decided if Im going to keep it or sell it.
It is sharp but not my sharpest. My Tokina 90mm f2.5 PK/A is sharper with great colors but it doesnt have the glow wide open. The Tak has an extremely nice focus and feels very balanced indeed. The front focusing is a bit annoying though. I have to learn how to counter that. Also the metering seems a little weird especially wide open.
It is very good in direct light though. Probably the best I have so maybe backlight portraits would be nice?

Hi everyone.

I recently got a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 85mm f1.8
Its in good condition, perfect glass, both caps and leather box.
Trying to decide what the heck to do with it.

What are the thoughts about this lens here amongst the experts?
