I hunted for a long time for mine. Strange that there are 2 on ebay right now. None of the Pentax 2000mm Reflex though

Something to keep in mind is that the field curvature of the 600/4 and the 300/2.8 are substantial enough at MFD to impact the DoF. This means that the center is in focus while the sides have slightly different depth of field. On the Lens Align, I switched things up to put a target in the middle of the ruler to find the correct AF adjustment.
Doing so worked wonders for my AF adjustment. I think the K-1's additional focus points and narrow DoF focusing should help, but I haven't had time to try yet.

I wish I could get that fluid head on a Wimberley. I'm nervous about putting that much weight on this video head.
How is it working?

I've got one planned for my future, but haven't made the purchase yet.
I think that any time you're shooting above 500mm, your technique is more critical to the sharpness than the lens. Over 700? The air itself is a problem. Heat or dust will soften your pictures.
Over 1000mm? DOF becomes a substantial problem. Best of luck in nailing the focus.
1200mm? Well, it's really fun.
Here's a Yellowstone brown bear eating the flowers @1200mm on the k3. This is entirely unprocessed. ---------- Post added 09-16-2014 at 09:23 PM ---------- My technique? Tripod quickly set up on mixed ground, one leg shorter than the others on pavement, with the others two in squishy gravel, at a downhill angle, with people stomping about all over the place. It was cloudy as well. Ultimately, this picture exceeded my expectations of what I thought I could pull off in this environment.

Did you find yourself an A* 1200 or is this the 600/4 with some form of TC? Did I miss a post on a 1200 somewhere?

@Weevil was this the lens on the classifieds posting up your way? Congrats on the acquisition. You've made a lifetime investment. :)
What is this wrap you've plied around your copy? I would like to know more.
Also, you should take a serious look at a Wimberley head. IMO, your current head isn't going to provide the stability you'll want for the long shots, and a wimberly will free you to move quickly when you need to, and keep stable when you dont. ;)

All distance Pentax shooters that don't have one think about having one. All Pentax shooters that have one want to be shooting with it when they aren't. :D

I'm ready to move to the UK, just from the second picture of that Fox. It may not follow the rule of thirds, but it is very pretty.

TaV mode is sometimes the way to go. Let the ISO float, and set your aperture and shutter speed for what you need.

@dane.dawg it sure looks like some back focusing is going on, even in some of the stationary images. I can see that the water behind the eagles can be sharper than the eagles.
As a thought, If you can find a focus point before, switch to manual focus, and then take pictures as they find that focus point, I'd say you might have more success with the flying images.
Bummer about a few of those images. Some of them are usable as they are, but on a couple it's a real shame you didn't get the right AF point.
Have you considered picking up a LensAlign and seeing if your lens has a back focus issue?

The A* 1200 was built with superior optics to the 600 & 300:
I concur. I haven't seen any fringing of any kind on my copy of the 1200

Best of luck unbolting the 800lb safe from the concrete floor and hauling it upstairs, not to mention getting into it. :D

@littledrawe I wonder if you could use some creative cloning to DoF stack the two birds together in the same image.
Great shots. Also with the 600 I assume?

And very contrasty, bit I think we are a bit far afield talking about a 24mm lens in the 300 + thread

We're going to have to ask you to break out your "make it dull" filter, and while you're at it, if you could make the image a little bit blurry by shaking the shot, that would be great.
Fantastic capture, and wicked sharp.
