A plastic cable tie (or Zip ties) as I think you call them are excellent for removing filters.

They put even pressure around the ring and plenty of friction to remove it. If you are squeezing the filter in only 2 or 3 points around the edge with your fingers then it binds as you are "deforming" the circulr ring slightly.
