You can really sometimes really make out when they list it poorly but you can tell from the pics what it is. The blemish looks almost like what happens when you leave a little lens cleaning solution on the lens and it dries, but I think it might be on the inside of the front element (if its on the outside it's not coming off). Maybe it has been cleaned internally. If it has they did an excellent job (except for that blemish). It wouldn't surprise me if i was professionally rebuilt as the function is the smoothest I have ever seen. The blemish is not visible straight on and the lens is clear (you have to tilt the lens to create a reflection to see it). It doesn't seem to effect image quality.
Modifying the mount went better than expected. there was no way an m42 adapter was going to work or so I thought). I ripped a mount off a jcpenny 135 2.8 that cost me 4$ and it fit perfectly though it was too short. a 52mm - 49mm step ring with 3 notches cut for the screws to clear made a perfect spacer. The spacer was a hint too thick so it focuses just past infinity. It would be easy to fix but I'm not going to bother for now. All I need now is a spacer ring to hold the aperture ring down. One made from the bottom liner of a filter case (thin white plastic that fits inside the case) mad a perfect one (remolded with a lip that fit perfect to hold it in place). I fit it a little too tight and it split so I'll have to make another. In the long run, I think a step up ring would work perfect but I didn't have the right size right now.

I scored decent today. I just received a vivitar series 1 70-210 3.5 version 2 (tokina) off ebay for 15$ shipped. ok fine so its olympus mount.and seems to have a blemish in the middle of the lens (not sure if it will effect image quality yet). It was an inexperienced seller that didn't know much. The auction description was for the filter. I was expecting much worse but it is functionally beautiful with good glass except for the blemish and a single black speck inside. Still not bad for 15$ shipped (I was also watching a k mount one that sold for 130$).

If you want to see an example of people that are willing to pay way too much for things given half a chance, check out runskipshop on amazon. They seem to specialize in discontinued products for 150-200% of suggested retail.
example roku xd streaming player v1 106.99. bestbuy, frys and walmart 80$. v2 available from the manufacture for 80$.
quantaray qb-6500a flash 129.95 the suggested retail on this was 80$, it's an old film version not compatible with most digital, the new version with same capabilities compatible with all digital cameras bought fro the manufacture (promaster) is 80$.
They have 6900 feedback!!!!

"Would you be OK operating in that kind of eBay? That's essentially what eBay would be if everyone sniped, just keep that in mind."
That is exactly what ebay is (to an extent) right now. I have never been much of an ebay shopper as there have been so may times in the past I have sat there for days watching an item, just to have it bid up to a completely ridiculous price. By ridiculous I mean new and commonly available items selling for more than suggested retail (when you could drive down the street to any local store and get it 20-30% off retail any day). Used items selling for more than new ones. sniping seems to have reduced this quite a bit from the way ebay used to be. It's not good for ebay or the sellers but it sure is good for the buyers. Do your research, decide what its worth to you, snipe for that much. It completely eliminates people that panic at the last minute or get so involved in winning at the last minute they forget what its worth. That is unless someone else bids early and starts it.
I have had quite the run of LBA mixed with a little ebay fever over the last couple of months (2 more lenses on the way and another I'm very likely to try and get now). Just about every auction was won in the last minute (many in the last 10 seconds). I won many and was out sniped on some. Most sold for reasonable prices (even the ones I lost because it was worth a little more to someone else). Thats the way I like it and I'm perfectly fine with the people that bid more and out sniped me. My bids (and I assume the bids of most others) were based on the value of the product and what it was worth to the person, not based on what others were bidding which is what Leeds to ridiculous prices and over bidding in the heat of the moment. It has made ebay a better place to shop from what I see.

I have to agree. 3 days ago, two people got in a bidding war over a lens (28 bids). At the last minute I won the auction sniping it. My max bid was only about 1$ higher than their highest bid. Had I bid early, I suspect that one of them would have bid a little higher and beat me out. Bidding at the last second didn't give them a chance to decide to bid more and try and beat me. In the end, if they had been willing to pay more in the first place, they would have got it, but sniping avoided my getting sucked into a bidding war that would raise the price much higher.

It's nice that there are still some of the less appreciated lenses like sears still out there going cheap. I have had my share of ebay mental illness myself lately. One thing to consider with that lost 100$ is how many good lenses did you get cheap? If some were not as described, I would ask to return and ask them to pay return shipping. Some sellers still care about feedback. If it was your gamble (I have a gamble on a might be a lens with a tx-pk adapter based on the blurry picture on the way right now), and you are accumulating foreign mounts, you might want to consider a bit of craziness I'm starting to dip into. Just take the mount off and attach an m42-pk adapter. I have done an olympus (easy), and have a canon torn apart and ready to go (the thickness of the mount was enough to make up the difference in flange distance). I have a couple of minolta next on the list (that might be a little harder).

got a vivitar 100-300mm 5.0, supposedly in like new condition for 20.50 shipped on ebay. The mount is tx or t4 (or something similar), and the adapter (pic was a bit blurry and it wasn't listed) looked like k mount meaning would have to be tx. Here is crossing my fingers when it arrives. Worst case it sits on the shelf till I get a tx adapter (already got another t4 lens waiting on one). I was mainly going for the adapter but they are selling for 20-30$ on ebay anyway so if its k mount I scored there. two guys were in a bidding war but I sniped it at the end (max bid was 80 cents over what I won it for so I just barely got it).

Picked up a SMC Pentax-FA 28-80mm F3.5-4.7 for 8$ shipped. It had a broken power zoom switch which seems to be the case with almost all of them. Other than that it was in nice shape and everything works fine including the manual zoom. I'm really liking the auto focus on this lens. So far it doesn't hunt at all. It zooms till it hits the spot and might micro adjust a little but stays on target. I tried shooting a moving object several times (kid on a bike coming at me) and it locked focus then micro adjusted to keep on focus as the target moved never jumping out of focus or having to make a major adjustment once. That was out door. Indoor I tried lesser tests and it seemed to lock fast and readjust very well too. Image quality was decent (nothing that stood out as exceptionally good but decent).

The last 2 months I have had a pretty big run of ebay LBA. 23 lenses (10 pentax mount or m42). Some of the others might be usable on a dslr.

Latest was a kalimar 35-70mm 2.8 KR mount and a kalimar 80-200 3.9 for 22$ shipped. I haven't got them yet but they better be in good good condition like the seller said (messaged to make sure glass was good etc and he said it was). I was only interested in the 35-70. I passed on another auction (5 lenses and 3 cameras that sold for 21$ shipped). It had the 35-70, a bit slower 80-200, 2 50mm's (already have same lens), a 135mm 2.8 (already have a similar one).

The best was a ricoh 50mm (sharpest lens I have ever seen, 7$ shipped in very nice shape).

Also a vivitar 35-70 2.8-3.8 (push pull was very stiff but good after a clean and lube, nice condition and glass). Paid 19$ shipped with a camera.

tou five star 500mm f8 paid 23$ shipped. It was dirty inside and out. I thought the front element had a big crack but it turned out to be a hair inside being magnified. It came apart easy (basically an empty tube with a few lenses) and actually cleaned up to be in nice condition including the glass.

a few primes 28mm, a few 50mm, 135mm all fast.

2 x slr teleconverter (no idea why as I have 2 but it was mega cheap and in good condition).

10 49mm and 10 52mm vivitar skylight filters (all new in box for 8$ shipped).

some novelty lenses like a hce variable macro, a kenko 5 surface prism lens etc.

Some rare and or expensive front mount teleconverters like a canon tl-55l 3x which had fungus but cleaned up pretty good.(originally sold for 300$, a solid heavy well built lens), a century optics .65x wide angle with bayonet mount that I already converted to 52mm (originally sold for about 600$, very good glass), 4 tokina teleconverters (2x, qty 2 4x and 5.5x). The 5.5 and 1 4x had fungus and the 2x is worthless to me so the 4x was all I got out of it but its surprisingly good. I was refunded a little less than half the total with shipping. MAybe I'll get lucky and the 5.5x will clean up but its gotta have at least a little permanent damage.

Nothing was over 25$ including lots (many were under 10$ shipped).

I also got maybe 2 dozen step rings, hoods, lens caps (cheap Chinese, auction, very cheap).

I think I need an intervention.
