Also turned off image stabilization and that helped too. Here is the moon cropped from 12MP frame and very much better than any I imaged before. However note the slight red chromatic fringing at bottom left of moon and blue fringing top right . I suspect a corrector element(s) in the lens may be slightly out of alignment. And echo about the sensitive focusing with this lens. You have to be very acute with the barrel movement otherwise easy to miss the sharp point.

I think it pays to use my prescription glasses when fine focusing with the SY 500/8. I seem to be getting better results now. Will do some more tests and see how it goes. Forgot how the eyes are not the same since years ago when I used manual focusing on my Olympus OM1 when I didn't need glasses. I am well aware of seeing effects as I deal with it viewing with telescopes as a long time amateur astronomer. So I test on suitable subjects and when seeing is good. Will post some examples for feedback.

Done tripod, electronic cable release, time delay exposure etc over and over...just does not give clean images like the examples above.

They're pretty good contrast and sharpness. Get nothing like that with my Samyang 500mm f8 which never seems to be able to focus sharply generally. Eg My moon shots are never sharp like yours, no matter how much I try on (Kx). They're hardy better than what I get with the Sigma 55-200mmm (at 200mm f8). Maybe it a bodge mirror lens?

If only that were so!. When I attach the mirror lens, even if I set the dial to Tv, Sv P Portrait, Landscape etc, the LCD reports Av! That is, the camera freezes in Av for all of them - except M. So either I shoot totally manual exposures which draws on my old knowledge of film exposure rules in day light or I shoot in "Av" whereupon the shutter auto adjusts but always 2-3 stops underexposed.

Ok got it. The camera does indeed attempt to find right shutter speed but it is always underexposing! If set to +2 or +3 overexposure it tends to get the correct exposure. But in movie mode it is correctly exposed by default. Why the discrepancy?

Kinda like the doughnut effect. It's the laws of optics at work!

Samyang 500mm f8 on K-x. I can not seem to be able to use the Tv setting, only manual. At a fixed f8 I thought that I could at least work the light meter by changing the shutter speed via Tv but no, it reports Av for ALL modes (including Tv) except M (manual). It seems the lens can only be used on manual. Is there a way to set it to meter with Tv?

I have a Tokina 75-105 zoom for my old Olympus OM1 and pleased with its performance over the years so thanks for tip.

I'm looking around for a mirror lens. Anyone used this apparently generic brand 500mm f8.
