Are we really THAT rare?

I'm still restoring my range of motion, still not supposed to lift weight with my right arm, and the Tammy is 6 pounds, and needs to be supported by two hands.

At present I can only lift with my left hand, so I'm restricted to left hand support and, it's even painful to press the shutter release with my right.

So I'm probably 2 or 3 months away from getting back out in the blind with the Tammy.

I'd set the Tammy up on the tripod, but my blind is down for the winter and there's 2 feet of snow where I set it up. Last time I tried it was painful to even hold the right hand up to press the shutter button. I'll try again in a few weeks.

It's sad, we have both Pine Grosbeaks and Redpolls wintering here this year and I'd like K-1 images of both. This is the first time in more than 5 years those birds have wintered with us.

Even second hand that lens is way out of my league. Besides, I'm a happy DA 55-300 PLM guy. When I need a "big gun" my Tamron 300 2.8 with the F 1.7x give me 510mm, ƒ4.5. Clearly superior.

I was looking at the Amazon Canada at the page for the 150-450
They have 62 reviews. The crazy thing being, if I was to guess how many have been sold in Canada, I would have said "maybe fifty." I'm guessing the Amazon reviews represent a small percentage of actual sales.

Where are all these lenses?

The guys I shoot with usually just hand me the whole camera when they want to demo a feature.

I know a couple of wealthy shooters who actually plan their Nikon purchases together, so they can have access to wide variety of lenses without having to buy them individually, then just borrow what they need on a given day.

I have a very small pelican case, that holds both the 21 and 40 XS. I always like to see the surprise when I tell them what's in the case, then open it up so they can see it.

I took my K-3 with 40xs mounted into one of B.B King's concerts. I went to a concert the the Rock Pile (circa 68) in Toronto, his first tour in Canada, and more recent, his last tour (At Massey Hall) just before he died. I walked in with it around my neck. No one guessed It wasn't a bridge camera, or they just didn't care.[COLOR="Silver"]

2017, was he last time I saw a Pentax, with approx. 20 shooting days at Niagara Falls, over 8 years, I saw a lot of cameras, but I never saw a Pentax.

I have maybe 4 more images or people shooting Pentax, and know of me because I shoot Pentax, so they don't count. , I have one other random shot from a group of photographers taken years ago. So in 10 years up here shooting Pentax, maybe 6 other encounters. It's not something that happens every year, and it seems to be getting to be less and less.

I've never seen a K-P, a K-1ii a K-30 or a K-50.

I'd love to say the situation is getting better but it's not. It's getting worse.

Big long huge heavy lenses in a confined space are not a good idea.
We've seen from Covid just how many would endanger others by bringing potentially dangerous equipment into a crowded situation. Some people just don't give care about the safety of others, so all DSLRs are banned. As usual, the bad behaviour of some leads to restricted options for the 90% of people capable of behaving responsibly.

If you hear a whir when he camera focuses it's mechanical.

If it's a screw drive lens (like the 50-200) is mounted on the camera, you use it every time you use the lens. it is auto-activated. No user input or selection is required.

I guess that's the thing. Pentax didn't have everything everyone else had, but it was cheap and functional.
I used to say "ya Canon, Nikon and Sony are better in some models, but I can't afford those models so it's moot."

Pentax is coming into the world of faster AF ring motors etc, but I can't afford them, so all they are doing is joining the Canon, Sony, Nikon club, users like myself are left behind. Although that 300 PLM goes against the grain, and ensures I'll probably won't ever give up my Pentax gear. Cheap, (I'm already on my second) fast, well corrected, and lightweight.

The rest of their current offerings are too big and heavy and too expensive. Don't get me wrong, these new lenses are so good, well worth the money if you have the money. So are the expensive offerings from other companies and Pentax is awful late to the game. That being said, Pentax has my price range extremely well covered, maybe better than anyone else, so if they want to change focus, there will always be stuff from the current catalogue that I'll find desirable. Users like me aren't the focus anymore, but as long as all those lightweight affordable high quality options are still in the catalogue, I won't be complaining.

My biggest complaint with Pentax, was nothing to offer in the 70-300 type range. The DA 55-300 PLM wiped that page out of the book and exceeded my expectations, to the point it took me a year to understand how good it really is. I didn't believe my eyes for a very long time. It is just too good to be true.

But I'm also seeing, those enthralled with the newer lenses are on a different Pentax path than I am. The Pentax future looks a lot different than the past I'm coming from. But honestly, sitting here with my K-3 and K-1, there isn't a thing I can think of I need. So Pentax moving on doesn't make me unhappy at all.

Only in some situations. IN the situation I often find myself in. where fast focus confirmation is required, Pentax is faster than any but the fastest 3.

For shots like this, where I'm set up, pre-focused single point focus and only need focus confirm before the shutter goes (just waiting for the right pose) Pentax is twice as fast as most of it's competitors, and faster than any camera set up for tracking or with more than one focus point being used. But shooters of other brands can work around that hoping for good results. :D

I seriously question how so many claim to know how bad Pentax is at some things without taking the time to find out what things Pentax is better than. Look up AF on Imaging Resources and you can find the documerntaion on how fast their single point AF is. And the 3 or 4 cameras that are better are only hundredths of a second better.

IN the park, I saw my first one in 10 years a couple days ago. An old Nikkormat with a kit lens. I thought I saw second a few days later but it was an Olympus. Apparently film isn't popular among the wildlife crowd.

More popular among the snapshot crowd I'm guessing. Although I did see a 4x5 view camera set up in the park a few years ago. SO still popular among the "super high resolution" crowd.

Everyone sees lots of other cameras, cameras for the most part that are incapable of doing what I do.

Good question, the people I bought my 21 ltd. and Tamron 90 macro from were both switching to other brands. My 90 macro came from a guy who's brother wanted to have them use the same systems for help carrying lenses on outings, two people, one set of lenses, and actually bought him a base Nikon system. The 21 came from a guy who was also switching to Nikon , but keeping some of his Pentax gear.

But, this only goes one way. I usually don't sell a lot of stuff, if you're selling stuff you meet people who are buying into Pentax, if you are buying stuff, you meet some people who're getting out. Although most of my second hand purchases were from people staying with the brand.

Rare only means not a lot of people bought them. Why people didn't by them has to be known before rare is good. If it was because they were really good lenses but very expensive, rare is good. If they were so cheap nobody wanted them, rare is bad. I have rare FAJ 18-35. It cost me $100 CAD, new old stock. It had probably been sitting in the warehouse for 20 years. Rare but cheap.

"Photography is a geeky hobby. Pentax doesn't try to hide that."
"You can touch the back screen but it doesn't do anything."

Well, OK then.

I'd be happy with my k-3 , with flip out backscreen, 10 FPS, 250 shot buffer and faster buffer clearing.
However falling short of that, I'll be looking for a clearout K-P or equivalent, when my K-3 dies.
I seriously doubt Pentax will do what I hope, but I'm also seriously ready to put another 70,000 clicks on my K-3 before I buy another camera. so , I don't really care. For a field camera I just love my K-1 and I'll stick with it.

In way I'm hoping the new APS-c sucks. I don't want to get tempted into buying a system that adds very little additional functionality.

My last trip to Exposure, they practically forced a 645D and DA 560 into my hands. They were disappointed. I told them the 560 was too long for me to carry to the places I go and the way I travel, and though I liked the 645D, the cost was prohibitive. IN retrospect, I wonder is the K-1 my 645D replacement?

I once got annoyed at a guy for a similar comment, but it was just his crusty manner of speech. MY favourite situation of that type was man and woman out shooting in Algonquin. They were actually an older "new couple" he shot Nikon, she shot Canon, the big question was what did I shoot (to break the tie). They were very disappointed. But I've heard that comment from people to other users of the same brand but a different model.

A small owner operated camera shop in St. Catherines On. sold 10 in the first month of the K-1, he would have sold at least 10 more if he could have acquired them. A competing store in the same town also sold all 10 they received.

So one town of 133,000, I know sold at least 20 and probably a lot more once supply caught up with demand. The sad part was all those older lenses I was watching, waiting for the price to go down, just disappeared off the shelves.

I'm not sure if you don't talk to the owners, you have any idea how many they actually sold. In that town, I actually had fellow Pentax owner in shopping for a tripod at the same time I was. I don't get out as much anymore though so I have no idea what the current situation is.

Back in the 60s and 70s days apparently with the Ontario Ministry of Lands and Forests (now the Ministry of Natural Resources) Spotmatics were used.
