SMC Pentax Super Tak ƒ1.4 and K-01

Since I have an FA 50, ƒ1.7, why would I buy an MF 1.4 lens and not use it at 1.4?

The weapon of choice, at least for this afternoon.

The images.

That's just out of sight excellent... what a morning, great capture...
That's one of those images that people who don't want to pay you for the image ask "where did you take that?" as if the same morning was going to happen for them if they went.

Cross p[osted from "Your pet a day."

From today's walk.. it's snowing, but it's warm, like -6 Celsius, we'll take it.
K-01 and 40 XS, a great combination that fits on my pocket like a point and shoot for easy no fuss carrying.

Waiting in the parking lot......
"How long can it possibly take you to get going dude?"

"I've got the ball and you don't, na , na , na"

"I was gone for 15 seconds, did you miss me? Huh Did you miss me?"

Dreamer doesn't really speak the "wolf pee" language, but it's close enough to dog , he can make out the gist of it. (The stain on the tree he's got his nose stuck into was left by a wolf, marking his territory.)

We have so many paths and variations of route, Tripper often goes on ahead, but he waits at every cross road. He stands 40 feet down the fork in the road he wants to take, but he's happy to go either way. Here he is this morning "down at the cross roads". We didn't go his way, maybe this afternoon.

I posted some K-01 images toady, some of them you might have seen before, I can't remember. I'll put this one up front, because, I was balanced on the edge of a rock against a tree, there was absolutely no way to get my eye up to the viewfinder without falling into a gorge, but with the K-01 and live view, it was a piece of cake.

and another...

All of them here...

Walking through the frozen wetlands, in a month this will be water... and we won't go through again until July.
It is still cold going down to -20 tonight and it snowed. What the heck?

The cabin...

The frozen wetland, you can walk where ever you want without getting your feet wet...

This time of year. we've already photographed everything of interest on the dog walk, but the dogs still provide some entertainment. Where is spring?

K-01 and 40XS, everyone else has seen one of my dog walks, today was the K-01s turn to go along...

We picked up Trippers ball, so it became all about the sticks....

Dreamer just looks on, he really doesn't care much for sticks, or Collie's for that matter...

He does find himself in the way from time to time.

For the other two it's all about the sticks...

If Misty runs off with the stick, Tripper can always bite a tree instead..

Cross posted from post your photos. The K-01 is great for this, no need to bend all the way over to peer into a view finder.

There are a lot of photo in the series, so I can't post them all in a thread. If interested click on the link at the bottom.

I have noticed a lot of mushrooms in the woods the last few days, so I was thinking. "Macro Mushroom Magic." But then I thought, "I have hundreds of Mushroom shots, what can you do with those things, I need to do something different." So today on my walk I took a great buddy who lives on top on the camera case in my dining room. Bird Watcher Bear. He's always ready to go, knapsack on his back, binoculars around his neck.

BW checks out a shroom...

Hey that shroom is just the right colour to be a hat.

I think I'll try one on, this one looks to be my size.

Two shrooms are better than one...

Checking out the fungus among us can be a lot of work.

A few fungi that are more my size.

The biggest shrooms of the walk.

Very cool looking shroom, it looks like coral.

I just love that fall colors shot Rondec.... but like many of the great vistas around here, there's a couple of poles and wires. I was looking at taking a shot like that yesterday where the highway was passing through an Aspen bush... I couldn't believe it, wires on both sides of the highway... they just won't give a photogrpaher an even break.

I shot this at various F stops, 2.8, 5.6, 11, 22 I believe. It's hard to remember exactly because M lenses don't record the F stop in the EXIF. While not quite as sharp as the f 5.6 image, the 22 was by far the superior image, because it got all the block of wood in focus, so just evaluating on what the image looked like, the F 22 appears to be much sharper than the 5.6 image. The small DoF in the 5.6 image is less than 5% of the total image and is just completely un-acceptable in this shot.

I am honestly baffled by the current antipathy towards ƒ16 and ƒ22. There is a crowd of propagandists for whom narrow DoF and razor sharpness is the be all and end all. That's just inappropriate for landscape photographers. Ansel Adams and many other of his generation were part of the ƒ64 club. They shot almost everything at ƒ64 on 8x10 film cameras. The competing narrow DoF faction hit it's peak in the early 30s and for the most part has been in decline ever since, except perhaps with portrait photographers, and their subset, wedding photographers.

I almost always use natural light. I'm trained in lighting in both commercial and portrait, but very rarely use artificial lighting. I'm not against it. Just natural light has the potential to be better IMHO.

This image was taken in the late afternoon sun, and even after white balance was applied it still retains much of it's late afternoon glow. I'd also ascribe some of it's appeal to the old glass used to take the photo. Glass makers used to pay more attention to the way lenses rendered an image, than to the absolute sharpness that seems to be the goal today. As a result, many lenses today produce razor sharp, detail rich, very technical images... but can't match the 77, the 31 or even the 21 ltd in terms of producing an attractive image. You go to these old lenses, and though the absolute sharpness may not be there, you get a more traditional kind of image. Oh and it looks much better large than it does reduced to 1024.

Location: Whitney Ontario Canada
Cameras- Pentax K-01, Sigma DP2 Merrill
Lenses: Pentax 18-135, Sigma 8-16, Sigma 70 macro

From yesterdays walk a 14 km round trip walk into Perly's Chute, one of our favourite fall destinations (and place of the demise of 3 kayakers over the years).

The main camera body is a Pentax k-01 with Sigma 8-16 and SIgma 70 macro, with possibly a few 18-135 images as well.

The area...

The foliage...

And one Sigma DP2M image, I don't get a lot of useful images with this camera yet, but when you nail one, the detail is incredible.
