It's like your kids visiting. At first you're happy to see them, but if they stay a month or two you'll be happy to see them go. I don't know how people keep motivated in bland flat climates.

This the old dude machine, it's only 8 hp, have 16 horse here, but this one doesn't toss me around like a rag doll. As for buttoning up the jacket, I get hot.

Meanwhile in my parking lot....

It's not that I'm not happy... it's that every now and then snow blows in my face. It doesn't hurt as much if you contort your face.

If the cost of living here is having to snow blow the driveway 5 or 6 times a year, that's fine for sure. If you ever make it up let me know. We'll do coffee at the AP Visitor's Centre or something.

It snowed overnight, they were coming later the same day. It takes us 2 days of hard work to clear our driveway by hand. I've never measured it but its between 300 and 400 feet. Then there's the 7 car parking lot, and we needed 5 spaces so not clearing them wasn't an option. Because our driveway runs down the side of a ridge, it's pretty easy to shove the snow over the edge with snow scoops, but t's still a two day job for 2 people.

I killed myself pretty much last Friday. We had a 6 inch snow fall, and we had friends coming for the weekend. The mountainside I call a driveway had to be blown. I've almost recovered now....

But T mows the lawn. Fitbit steps are a big motivator for her.

My cardiologist last month after a brief conversation, when announcing her conclusions said :You can tell me to F---- off if you want... but.." I take it I'm not exactly the ideal patient.

Rick has built so much quality into his (dream home) house it's almost mind blowing. Soundproofing insulation in most of the walls, high end flooring, mid to high end fixtures, custom wood doors. He actually had to reduce the size of the house about 50% to build it with the quality he wanted.

When I wired my old log farmhouse, I got quotes in the $1500-$2000 range (1875 money). I asked my neighbour an electrician, if he wanted to do it, "get 'this guy', he's the best currently working in the county." "This guy" cost me $800 and was done in a day. When I told the inspector who had done the wiring, my name was on the permit, he just said "Oh, I don't need to inspect that, I'll just file the report and you're good to go." Having knowledge of who is good is important. That being said, most big companies keep their best employees during the winter so they don't have an excuse to look for work somewhere else. Many of the best are not available to the run of the mill contractors. If you find a skilled tradesman doing 'make work' in the winter, you know he makes enough on the real jobs in the season to be paid all winter long. I also used to know a really good window installer. He by himself could replace the windows in a house in 1/3 the time as a 3 man crew.

I don't know that it's all on Rick's contractor. One of his best friends since forever. They talk every morning on the phone. The biggest issue with Rick's place was, the concrete block was 6 weeks late. The supply chain shortages, then when block did arrive, his foundation guy was working 12 hours a day through weekends etc. trying to catch up. Then he hired an HVAC guy who turned out to be completely unreliable, costing him thousands in fuel and rent for generators. IN any case, his second crew is getting him back on schedule. Plus, he's hung much of the drywall himself, being an IT guy, with lots of physical energy left when his regular work day is over. HIs GF and dogs stay with us, so he can concentrate on getting the house done.

My step son Rick is acting a his own general contractor building his "dream home". He's hired an out of work crew to come in and help the original tradesmen, a number of whom have fallen short. He's moving out March 14th, so things need to be done. he says the new guys, regular house builders who couldn't find work for the whole winter are really good and getting him back on schedule... but he's paying two crews to do what he thought could be done by one. Possibly the result of having one of his friends put together the first crew from personal friends etc.

A few years ago there was one at a major Toronto intersection that took a very long time to fix. Maybe you need to convert it into an underground parking garage.

Some examples from the Timmins area. One of my graduated students worked with a crew inspecting old mines to see if they could be put back into production. He said in many places there were gold nuggets lying on the floor of the mine shafts, where they had washed out of the "ceiling" over the years, but the old timbers slowly decaying made them extremely dangerous. And of course he was searched on the way out to make sure he didn't have any. People have died going down those mines looking for nuggets. Where gold is involved, people will do crazy ass stupid $#!t.

There are some major sink holes in that link.

A few years ago a whole transport truck complete with trailer dropped into a mine shaft/sink hole while parked in the Consumer Distributing parking lot. They had to bring in cranes to get it out.

Ours has gone down 4 times in the last two months. One of the technicians checked the line from the fiber-op junction and found 7 under-spec connections one with a mouse nest in the box. All the squiggly wires that protect the line from stress were broken and not working properly. My wire was wiggling with the wind attaching, then separating then touching again. I have no idea if his work order was ever attended to, but it died again 2 weeks later. One of the techs suggested getting my Internet from the cell tower which would be almost as cheap if the wireless modem didn't cost $600.

Sitting in room with my grandmother and grand father. My grandmother was prattling away, at one point she stopped having asked my grandfather a question. He didn't answer, my grandmother says "Oh, he's going deaf, he can't hear me." I whispered as softly as I could 'hey Chris.' He said "What?" The information that you might be a little deaf can come in handy.

I don't know what it means, and can't be bothered trying to go back though the thread to figure it out. I did read the comment, nothing came to mind. Whether that's a commentary on my mind or your comment I don't know. :D
