Let us know how he makes out, the issue for young loons is, they have to be able to get airborne before ice out... they are pretty good flyers, but not so good at taking off, so primitive they don't have an elbow joint to assist with take off. You'll see it running on the water trying to get up. If ice starts before they leave they won't be able to take off from a small hole in the ice, they need a long runway.

Loons aren't ducks, they don't quack...
One of the oldest families of bird, modern loons are in the fossil record, 37 million years ago, with related ancestors 100 million years ago, long before ducks. They have 60 calls all with different meanings, none of which sound at all like a duck.
