First lens for a beginner

I haven't read through the whole thread, but this last post makes a lot of sense.

Full disclosure - I own a lot of lenses, especially old Soviet models as I collect them. But I don't need them.

Shooting with one prime lens for a long time can really build your photography skills. After a while, you start to automatically see your subjects within the field of view of that lens, even without holding the camera to your eye. You begin to automatically judge suitable shooting distance before lifting the camera into place. You learn the optimal aperture of the lens for perfect depth-of-field and resolution.

You can do a huge amount with a 35mm lens on APS-C. It's one of my favourite focal lengths (with a field of view very close to a 50mm lens on a 35mm film camera), and the DA 35 f/2.4 is one of my favourite lenses - it's cheap, light and optically very good. I'd recommend it over a manual focus lens to begin with, as it removes one potential area of frustration (manual focus through the viewfinder on modern DSLRs takes practice).
