Folks, I believe this thread has gone about as far as it can without descending into argument. In any case, I think there has been a good balance of views presented.

Thread now closed.

Well said.

The problem I have with threads like these - "I'm leaving Pentax, and this is why" - is that they always receive a number of supportive "bandwagon" responses from several other disgruntled users, who actually form only a very small portion of the user base, but their combined discontent is concentrated into the thread. The potential influence this can have on less-experienced photographers, who may form premature negative opinions from what they read online rather than making their own minds up through extensive use of their gear, is troubling. And then those learned opinions get passed on to equally susceptible folks. I realise that's not the OP's intention here, but it's an unfortunate side effect nonetheless.

If there are any newer Pentax users reading this particular thread, or any future leaver threads, I'd implore you to keep an open mind. Don't be influenced by dissatisfied current or former Pentax owners, and learn what works for you by getting out there and using your camera, then make up your own mind. All equipment (regardless of brand) has limitations, but those limitations typically only affect a relatively small proportion of the user base with extremely high expectations or specific use cases. For the rest of us, any of the brands offers cameras and lenses that are more than capable of doing what we need - but some skill is required from the photographer too...

You didn't have an active listing in the Marketplace, so that would have been selling outside the Marketplace. That's the difference ;)

This opening part of your post is quite important, I think, because it quite rightly demonstrates that we're all different.

For some, Pentax is an on-going and (if rather slowly) developing part of their photography. I consider myself in that group, not because I'm a fan-boy (I'm definitely not :p), but because the equipment has met my needs extremely well for a number of years, and continues to do so. I have no need to switch to a different brand.

Others - like Justin - see valid (to them, at least, if not to all of us) reasons why Pentax is no longer the best choice. And that's absolutely fine... those folks should switch to what works best for them. There's no sense in remaining longer term with a brand that doesn't offer what you want, so I respect their choices. I'd switch too if I felt the same. Of course, some leavers take a dive-bombing approach of trying to widely discredit Pentax in favour of their newly chosen brand by posting emotionally about their departure - usually, I suspect, to reassure themselves by garnering support and solidarity from disgruntled users. But I genuinely don't believe that's Justin's motivation here.

And then, we have folks joining the brand, either from other brands (and for a wide variety of reasons) or for their first foray into serious digital photography. We see quite a number of new members of this type, so we know it's happening. This is often forgotten in threads like these, so I believe it's worth mentioning for the sake of balance.

Really, the situation hasn't changed all that much in the 8 - 9 years I've been active on these forums. Of course, I'm always a little sad to see folks switch away, but always happy to see others join too. It's casually interesting to me why people switch away from, or to, the brand... but only casually. It doesn't affect my own views, and it shouldn't affect others. All that matters is that we each go with the brand that gives us what we need for enjoyment or professional reasons :)

Still, like most of us (i'd guess), I do hope to see more product development from Ricoh and at a somewhat faster pace. But folks switching in and out of the brand shouldn't be a surprise or concern for any of us. It's nothing new...

Further to this... Back in the 80s, the car I owned didn't have cruise control. I could drive more-or-less at the speed limit on our highways by monitoring the readout on my speedometer and adjusting my accelerator pedal input accordingly. Later, I owned cars with cruise control and speed limiters, so I could set the speed I needed. Both achieved much the same result, but the latter made it easier and more reliable... :)

Hi Justin :)

I'm sorry to hear you are leaving Pentax, but pleased you've decided on a brand that offers what you want.

I suspect you'll get a lot of responses challenging some of your reasons and statements, but you're a smart guy and I'm sure you'd expect nothing less considering the brand-specific nature of these forums. So, if some of the responses you receive are, to a greater or lesser extent, defensive of the brand, I trust you'll understand.

Personally, I love my Pentax gear, and it does more-or-less everything I want. That said, I don't have any pressing concerns over the resolving power of my lenses compared to my peers, or class-leading AF.C... This is just a hobby for me, and none of my images are going to be displayed on a wall at art gallery sizes. Come to think of it, I don't think I have any peers :p

I do wish that Ricoh Imaging would step up the pace in developing new glass for full frame, even though that doesn't affect me personally (since I'm sticking with APS-C for my Pentax gear). I think folks who've invested in the K-1 and K-1II deserve faster progress to maturity in the modern full-frame lens range. For this reason, I hope Ricoh Imaging reps read your post.

That said, many folks are very happy that they can use what they already have. Many still aspire to owning the "three princesses"... So it's very much down to the individual users needs and expectations.

I won't get into the problems you've had with AF or other aspects of technical performance. I acknowledge you and other folks have had them. I've had a few AF.C issues myself, but for my use cases, nothing I can't accept or work around. Again, I think it's down to the individual user as to how significant, intrusive and - hence - important these issues are. But there's room for improvement, sure.

In closing, I wish you the best of luck with Nikon and hope you won't be a stranger to these forums simply because of a brand change. It's just not that big of a deal... I think some folks take brand loyalty rather too seriously. Not me.. These cameras and lenses are all just tools. What works for one member won't work for another, for a variety of reasons. It's all good. What's important is that you find something you like, something that works for you, and get out there shooting.

Have fun, and don't be a stranger :)
