I had to check my A7 MkII to see what info I have set up in the viewfinder... Thin bottom area showing same exposure info as a DSLR... Thin top area showing additional info such as aspect ratio, RAW / JPEG setting, battery status etc. Neither of those overlay the image view in any way. Then, just the plain old image view - no guide lines or overlayed information, except for the live histogram (my favourite feature) in the bottom right corner...

I don't think your photos would be dramatically better if taken using an EVF. I don't think they'd be any better at all. That's a fallacy, for sure.

That said, I do find that I get a better keeper rate (or have to take fewer shots to get a keeper) in certain situations when using my mirrorless EVF camera. The live histogram is particularly useful, as I know for sure whether I'm under-exposing shadows or over-exposing highlights and can adjust accordingly before I even press the shutter release. Even though I'm pretty competent at estimating EV compensation for different scenes when using my DSLRs, there are times - especially with higher-dynamic-range scenes - where I don't get it quite right, or at least not optimal. And if I'm shooting with shallow depth-of-field, an EVF allows me to obtain and/or check for precise focus accuracy. By the time I take the shot, I know for sure I've got the focus spot on, rather than having to chimp or find out later on during raw development.

So, whilst I prefer looking through an OVF, there are benefits - to me - in using an EVF for certain situations. A well-executed hybrid of the two would be awesome...

I'd definitely prefer a hybrid viewfinder, due to the considerable benefits of combining both aspects (e.g. live histogram overlay on optical view)... that said, an interchangeable optical / electronic viewfinder would give me the flexibility to configure the camera for each shoot's primary use case. I'd like that, no doubt about it...

Right - and I think many folks who like the idea of that feature would agree. Heck, I'd love that too. But this supports my point that individual use cases are a significant factor in dictating what's "better" or "best"...

There's a not-inconsiderable "movement" of folks that like to shoot all sorts of glass that's intended for SLRs, rangefinders, cine cameras, enlargers, and all manner of other optical devices. One of my own interests is a subset of that - specifically Soviet glass for K-mount, M42, M39 SLR and L39 rangefinder, plus adapted glass from other Soviet cameras and optical instruments. It's easy to say that's a specialist application, and I guess it is to some extent, but there are many folks doing this. I've come to it relatively late on... it's not even a sub-culture any more, but quite a common practice and interest area...

So, for us weirdos, short registration distance can be an attractive feature, and a reason to shoot mirrorless even though our preferences for general shooting might favour a traditional DSLR, or better still one with a hybrid viewfinder...

In any case, I look forward to DSLRs with hybrid viewfinders. I'm not one for selling off my treasured gear, but I'd make an exception to fund a camera like that :D

We're getting into the "same old, same old" OVF vs EVF discussion, and it can't possibly be resolved - because we all have a different selection of use cases, different preferences, different tolerances, and different expectations. As such, there are no definitive right and wrong answers. All I know is what works for me, and depending on my use case on any given day, it might be a DSLR or mirrorless camera (occasionally it might even be a bridge camera, compact camera, or a phone). I can repeat the reasons for each choice that I've posted in these forums before, but it's quite immaterial. The fact is, whatever works best for folks, that's what they should shoot - and that's all the justification they need. I couldn't begin to suggest what others should use without colouring my suggestions with my own preferences, and I don't think anyone else can legitimately tell anyone what they should shoot, or whether their choices are right or wrong. Debating which is better / best and why is ultimately fruitless :o

Me too. I would be very excited about a camera that offered me a good OVF, with the choice of configurable electronic overlays (histogram, aspect ratio, focus peaking etc.) and the ability to switch to EVF when it might be a better option. Of course, I'd still need a short registration distance mirrorless camera to shoot lenses with a flange focal distance smaller than the hybrid viewfinder camera... but I'd probably use that mirrorless camera far less than I do today...

I've found an EVF can also be problematic in very bright daylight, for two reasons: firstly, as already mentioned, I need to get my eye right up against the viewfinder otherwise glare can be a problem; secondly, if it's a really sunny day, my eyes adjust to the brightness (pupils closing) as I'm walking around, then when I bring the camera to my eye, the EVF can be too dim. I noticed this with my Hasselblad HV on a short break last year. I don't have that issue with an OVF - at least, not to the same degree...

I'm going to respectfully disagree, here. In lower light situations - very early morning / early evening, poorly lit indoor scenes where you nevertheless want to maintain what natural lighting exists, etc. - it's nice to have the EVF showing the scene more brightly (albeit with a little noise), whilst working off the live histogram to ensure correct exposure. And it's especially helpful when shooting slower lenses that might otherwise offer a dimmed view through an OVF.

As I said previously, I prefer using an OVF - but there are times when a good EVF can be very useful...

I agree to some extent. I don't have problems with battery life on my mirrorless setup either, but it's way less generous than my DSLRs, especially if I take the same approach with each (e.g. not displaying a review image)...

I wish you could tell me how to get 600 shots out of one OEM battery on my A7 MkII... It might be possible, I guess, but not the way I want to use it. And that's kind of what I'm referring to above... sure, you can wring more out of the battery if you optimise settings, but that might not gel with how you want to use the camera. In any case, you can optimise utilisation with most DSLRs and get even more battery life.

For my own part, I have the battery grip permanently attached to my A7 MkII... It helps with the general handling, but I need it for battery life if I'm going to be out all afternoon, and certainly all day. It's less of a problem with my Hassleblad HV (Sony A99) due to the larger battery. And with my K-3, I only fit the battery grip if I know I'm going to have a long and heavy day of shooting, or if I want the portrait orientating replication of controls...

Yep, those are all things I like about the EVF on my SLT and mirrorless gear - especially the manual focus benefit, which - although no different to Live View on a DSLR - is easier and more enjoyable with my eye to the viewfinder. Add to that DOF preview with no loss of brightness, and - for manual aperture lenses - actual DOF view. Plus, registration distance on most mirrorless bodies that provides access to an even wider range of legacy glass, if that's your thing (it's one of mine).

But, I'm less crazy about the digitised / unnatural view, difficulty in seeing the EVF view when I have strong sunlight behind me (really have to jam my eye into the viewfinder), and the tiny but noticeable lag (more of a problem on some cameras than others). Battery life isn't typically great, either, due to the constant "live view" whether you're using the EVF or main LCD screen.

Overall, I prefer looking through an OVF, and I find shooting with a DSLR more pleasurable. But, when the application calls for it, I'll happily go with mirrorless. Thankfully, I'm not one of those adversely affected when using an EVF, so they work pretty well for me.

I take your point... but I'd like to think most folks are a little smarter than that. It's one thing to spend $200 on a pair of football boots, or $75 on a perfume, but quite another to spend thousands of dollars on a camera and lenses just because someone whose work you like shoots that system. Most folks spending that kind of money already have a little experience with photography and aren't likely to be so naive and gullible as to be significantly influenced by this guy...

I don't think it does, really. There's nothing in that guy's newsletter that folks don't already know about mirrorless. And in spite of the advantages, everyone knows there are some disadvantages too... Or, rather, neither DSLR or mirrorless is the best tool for every job and every photographer. I say that as someone who actively shoots both types of camera...
