New Sony A7II and A9 with IBIS

I received my A7II today. It will take me some time to learn the different controls. You can switch from single to continuous with one button. With 4 custom buttons it will take several weeks for me to decide how I want to set them up and learn to use them without thinking. I have had the K-3 for over a year and I still have to think about how to change metering since they changed it from the K-5.

The A7II is my first mirrorless. I can't give you much of an opinion in just one day, but I am very impressed with the IQ. I was going to buy an A7r, but I really hated the grip and shutter release. Sony fixed that and it is a huge improvement for me. The 5-axis IBIS seems to be very good. Shooting Christmas ornaments with the Sony Zeiss 55mm F/1.8 at F/1.8 - 1/15th second shutter is giving me sharp hand held images. The 55mm is surprising sharp at F/1.8. Bokeh light balls do have onion rings when you look at them at 1:1, but I don't sell 1:1 crops of light balls. When people start asking for them, I'll worry about it. Battery life does suck and its obvious after one hour of casual use. AF is much better than I expected. I have only had the lens hunt once while trying to focus on a dark brown piece of furniture in poor indoor light.

I don't know which I actually prefer yet. The A7II is a very capable camera with an excellent EVF.

Too tempting. 55mm F/1.8, 2 batteries, & NEX-PK lens adapter arrived today. A7M2 is on its way. I was a late pre-order, so I probably wont get it until next week. Looking forward to finally using the 31mm as it was originally designed.

Just saw these over on Fred Miranda. Nice sample shots. I like the tones and textures of the HC B&W. Can you customize the settings for HC B&W? What site do you review for?

I think the bigger grip is a definite positive. The grip needs to fill the hand, and unless it sticks out farther than the lens its not a problem. My biggest problem with the A7 line was that my hands started to cramp up after an hour of use. It was just not comfortable to use for an extended period of time.

Here is a picture of the A7 next to the A7II. My biggest 2 issues with the A7/A7r have been that the grip was too small and it lacked IBIS (that and lenses). The slightly deeper grip, moving the shutter release down, and added IBIS are big changes for me. I will probably pre-order with a Zeiss Loxia.

If they were working together I would expect to see the SR based AA filter feature in the Sony line. Sony says the 5-axis IBIS is their own design, but Nikon claims that they make all their own sensors too.

I would be willing to bet the IBIS is an Olympus design that Sony has modified to work with a larger sensor and with the FE-mount. I would also bet that Olympus is designing glass for the FE mount. Sony didn't just give Olympus $400 million out of the kindness. Sony was bleeding financially at the time of the investment, so they were expecting a quick return. For comparison Ricoh bought Pentax for less than half of the money Sony invested into Olympus.

The X-mount and FE mount are both brand new systems. Today they don't have those options. Fuji will have the fast zooms by the end of 2015. Actually in 2015 Fuji will pass Pentax in its fast zoom offering with the 150-400mm. Fuji will have the 10-24mm, 16-50mm F/2.8, 50-140mm F/2.8 and the 150-400mm. Sony is probably 2-3 years away from filling out the line.

I expect Sony and Fuji to both release larger "pro" bodies in 2015. The X-T1 is just too small for the big zooms on the road map.

But most companies automatically turn IBIS off when you set the camera to timer or are using a remote. The risk is extremely low. The reason image stabilization is used at all is that the IQ advantages great exceed the risk.

But its OK for you to assume that there will be one because it has IBIS? I owned the K-5 and I have never seen any evidence of IBIS causing blur. There was some talk about mirror slap on the K-7, but not IBIS.

And we don't care if its is significant to you or not. Its a highly desirable feature for many people and if implemented right improves image quality for people who shoot handheld. IF weight is such a major factor for you then stick to your iPhone camera. You wont have to worry about IBIS.

Its part of the Olympus deal. Its the Olympus 5 axis IBIS scaled up to a larger sensor. Best IBIS made. Olympus is also working on glass for the FE mount, but Sony recently denied it.

It really weighs very little and there are millions of cameras that have IBIS (Olympus, Pentax, Sony) that don't have a problem with blur. You are much more likely to have blur from the shutter movement.
