I think we will see a new body ship when the new DA* lens ships. The new DA* zoom is very good news.

Did you recently move to Virginia? For some reason I thought you were in Indiana?

There is nothing wrong with it. When I first went digital with the Canon 5D I was using JPEG. My RAW processing skills were poor at best and I don't think Lightroom had come out yet. If LR was around I wasn't using it. OOC JPEGs were better than what I could do at my skill level at that time.

Absolutely. This has been one of Fuji's biggest selling points is the OOC JPEGs. I think the KP is a great camera and I have said nothing negative about it. I hope its a huge success for the company. I hope Ricoh continues to make big improvements in the image processing and OOC JPEGs. Sony has made major improvements in its color profiles, but they still make people look like they have bad spray tans. I don't have an issue with Ricoh cooking its RAW files for better results. I don't have an issue with Fuji cooking theirs or with Sony.

I know a wedding photographer who shoots with Fuji and uses OOC JPEGS fro most of the work he delivers to his clients. There are real advantages to doing this. OOC JPEGs save him a whole lot of time and his work/portfolio is very uniform and consistent. I see a lot of people who shoot RAW deliver work where the processing is all over the place. Their portfolio looks like a bag of Skittles. Its like they go through each RAW file and ask "Which Topaz preset should I use on this one."

That's hilarious. I guess it's important to be included into a group of nobodies? I could understand if it was a reference to a group of important people, but every "Tom, Dick, & Harry" is a generalized reference to a group of people so unimportant that you don't actually care what their real names are. Its derogatory. Why do people want to include themselves in such a group? I really don't want to know. It was good for a laugh after a long day.

I did not say it was all software. I said the camera was applying NR to the image before it was saved as a DNG or RAW file. Which is basically what the Ricoh marketing material says as rawr posted above.

I'm not sure that it is a new generation of Sony sensor. Sony has not introduced a new SKU for a 24MP APS-C sensor. Maybe you can link to the new generation of Sony sensor? Its not the a6500/6300 sensor because that has PDAF on sensor. The IMX193 is what is in all of the 24MP APS-C DSLRs. The IMX 271 is the 24MP sensor with PDAF on chip and that is used in the Fuji X-T2, a6500 and all mirrorless APS-C cameras that have a 24MP Sony APS-C sensor. These are the only Sony 24MP APS-C sensors currently in production. Products Line up for Camera Image Sensor for Camera | Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation

Please post the link to the new generation of Sony 24MP APS-C sensor you are referring to.

I had the K-7 and the K-5. I still have the K-3 and K-1. Yes, improvements have been made, but they continue to fall farther and farther behind. Even mirrorless has surpassed Ricoh in AF and that is kind of sad. Other than the Fuji GFX, I think pretty much all current generation mirrorless cameras from Sony, Fuji, or Olympus have better AF than anything Ricoh makes. The Fuji GFX is pretty awful in anything but great light.

Its just noise reduction that is being applied prior to the file being written as a DNG or PEF. As DxO pointed out with their PRIME NR software, good noise reduction takes a lot of processing power. This is why PRIME is so slow. Ricoh is adding a processor to apply low level NR. Looking at the RAW files on DPR at 3200 I see less chroma noise, but more blotches.

There is.... After they apply noise reduction to the RAW file. Also from DP Review:

"We're a bit surprised by this performance, as there was little information given to us on how Pentax actually achieved this performance. Given this sensor doesn't feature new technologies like BSI, we suspect there's some 'baking' done to the Raw files. There are clear signs of noise reduction upon further analysis of the Raw (the green channel shows blotches of no detail where other cameras do not). And this comes at a cost - sometimes decreased detail, and odd cross-hatch patterning throughout the image."

I would be willing to bet that a K-3 RAW file processed by DxO Prime would give as good or better results than the KP in terms of noise. I don't have a problem with what the KP does. The K-5 also applied in camera noise reduction to the RAW files at higher ISO and that was a great camera. There is no magical improvement here with the KP, its basically the same Sony sensor with some NR applied in camera. For people who aren't proficient with RAW processors, this is a good thing.

Looking at the KP RAW files it looks like Ricoh is simply apply noise reduction to the RAW files, which they have done in the past. You can process K-3/K-3II RAW files and get very similar results to the KP. Its not a big step up. If you shoot JPEGs mostly then the KP is a step up with better processing, but I would guess that most of the people buying the K-3 replacement wont be using it to mostly shoot JPEGs.

I think some of it is latency in the system. They need faster hardware and they need to get the AF points closer together. Ultimately I think we see something like a 2MP sensor with PDAF used for the RGB sensor. This would allow for much better scene recognition and even facial and eye recognition. We would need a lot more processing power. Ricoh also needs to implement auto calibration technology for lenses so they can elminate front and back focusing.

I don't know what the problem has been. I have heard that companies like Canon and Nikon have patents that have made it difficult, but I don't know if that is true. I do know that just 5 years ago both Sony and Fuji had pittiful AF systems, but in that very short period of time they have passed Ricoh in AF. Have you played wiht the AF of a Sony A9 or even the Olympus OMD-EMII? Both are much faster than anything Ricoh has produced.

After playing with the A9, I'm not sure Ricoh can catch up. The eye-AF on the A9 is amazing. The D5 is probably still a little faster and more responsive, but the A9 is more flexible and makes compostition a lot easier. Ricoh needs to find away to bring features like eye-AF to the OVF.

At this point, what is to be gained by releasing a K-3 success that doesn't have dramatically improved AF? The K-3II is an excellent camera in every other way. Yes, they could improve the connectivity and image processing to some degree. AF is the last key technology that Ricoh needs to dramatically improve. They are already selling one of the best built and feature packed cameras you can buy for the money. If they can ever catch up in AF they will sell a lot of cameras. The new DA* 11-18 F/2.8 brings hope that the other DA* zooms will soon get updated.

We have been hoping for that for years. Ricoh has filed a couple of patents for AF, but that doesn't mean we will ever see the technology. They also have a patent for a hybrid OVF that I would like to see.

Right now all cameras have excellent image quality. What separates the companies is the support technology like AF, connectivity, & image processing. All things that Ricoh needs to really improve upon.

With the launch of the DA* 11-18mm F/2.8 I would expect a K-3 replacement to come around the same time as that ships. Camera companies typically like to group releases like this. With the recent drop in the 645z price, I do think we see a 645 body soon, but the expected new Sony MF sensor is not scheduled to ship until next Spring. Unless Ricoh is using a different sensor, I don't expect to see a 645 replacement this year.... But who knows.
