This is the difficult part to answer. The price you quoted seems very good, if the FA 80-200 is in good condition. On the other hand, the Sigma is cheaper and would be brand new for a lot less money. So you have to decide, what is more important for you: the brand and rare opportunity for a good buy or the lower cost and warranty, which comes with a new lens.

In terms of performance, the Sigma is a sharp lens. I have the older Sigma version, without macro setting and can only heartily recommend it. The image quality is simply excellent, even when used fully open. The same seems to be true for the FA - but I never bought one, because I found it too heavy and too big and too expensive as a used item. But at that price, I must confess, I would be tempted...

I would say, it is not a "must" buy, but a very good opportunity (provided the lens is o.k.)

Yes, wrong. I cannot understand, why a 70-200 would be different from a 80-200 (apart from the tiny 10mm at the short end)? Your basic thinking is flawed. The 80-200 on a 35mm camera behaves like a 80-200 on 35mm. The 70-200 behaves like a 70-200 on a 35mm camera. That's all - no mysterious around the corner thinking necessary.

And both lenses mounted on a APS-C camera basically provide the angle of view, which a 120-300mm lens would give mounted to a 35mm camera.

The point is: Whether a lens is expressedly made for APS-C or for 35mm or for 8x10-inch large format makes no difference. The focal length of a 300mm lens will always be 300mm and the 300mm large format lens will exactly provide the same angle of view, the same aperture stops etc, as a dedicated APS-C 300mm lens would do - if you mount the lenses on the same camera body.

No, that's all wrong.

The focal length of a lens is a physical property. IT DOES NOT CHANGE - on whatever camera you use it. The 80-200 is a 80-200 on a 35mm film camera and it is a 80-200 on a APS-C DSLR. Any other lens, including the Sigma 70-200 etc. behave exactly the same.

The difference is only, that the smaller APS-C sensor does not fully use the field of view, the lens provides, but cuts out a central part. That means, the angle of view of the 80-200 mounted on a APS-C DSLR is roughly equivalent to the angle of view of a 120-400mm lens mounted on a 35mm film or full-frame camera.

Nimrad, the old 80-200/2.8 is - in my view - heavily overpriced. The average price here in Germany is around 1500 Euros - and that is way too much.

I have bought the older Sigma 70-200/2.8 (non-macro) and that is a well-made and highly capable lens. One of the advantages over the old Pentax FA is the smaller size and reduced weight. When the FA 80-200 came newly onto the market I bought a couple of thee FA series lenses, the 85, the 24 and the 28-75 - but left out the 80-200, because I found it too big and heavy. I am highly satisfied with the Sigma, though.
