Yes, the macro ring should maybe be called the lousy ring because that seems to be the effect! I like the results a lot less with the macro ring in use. Results combined with a Vivitar 2x Macro TC are considerably better.

I just did some surgery on a $31 135mm 2.8 A lens from eBay to remove the Ricoh pin. The surgery was a success and I've just taken a few shots during my bike commute this morning as a test. It's seems to have some lack of contrast, softness, and pretty bad CA in harsh light situations when wide open. But stopped down a little and in less challenging light it seems to do ok. I'm thinking it could make a nice portrait lens. I liked that it has the 'A' functionality which my optically nicer Pentax M 135 f/2.5 did not have so it will be easier to shoot with.
The lens it's self has no brand markings on it. The seller thought it was a Sears, Samyang, or possibly Vivitar. IMGP0979 by MattB (somedudeus), on Flickr
