I've been getting more use from my 645-A* 300/4 since I got a GFX 50r. The focus aids really help and I can get sharper focus than when I was using it with the 645D. |

Interesting idea about machining the old foot. I'll give it some thought.
Are there stories of foot or mount failure that didn't have a mishap like mine? Even though mine broke it was from a fall. I would expect to hold up to a side mount unless there is a trend of these just coming apart.

Does anyone know of a Arca Swiss tripod plate that is just right for the foot of the 150-450 (or 70-200 - same foot)?
I have one that is the same length as the base of the foot which is good but it only has one screw and does not have a matching hole for the second hole in the tripod foot. I'd like one that can either accommodate two screws into the foot or maybe one screw and a peg for the second hole to stop it from rotating.
Seems like this is a thing that is likely to exist. Hopefully it is!

I like the look of the Side Kick because it looks like it would be a lot easier to carry and to put on or take off than a whole gimbal would be. And reviews are pretty positive. And the price looks pretty nice too. If I can avoid swapping tripod heads in the field I'd like to. But I need to research a little more and maybe find a video or two to demonstrate it in action. It looks like it would shift the center of gravity in a favorable way and that seems to be the main point of a gimbal.

I haven't yet but I need to find my best technique for this beast and it might be another tool to help get maximum sharpness.
I'm also considering buying something like a Wimberley Arca Sidekick Ball to Gimbal Head Adapter or even just a traditional Gimbal head for increased stability over my Benro G3 ballhead (which is pretty nice but maybe not the right tool here).

I've got my 150-450 back up and running after I broke it almost immediately after getting it. The break was the foot and the plate the foot mounts to that is on the lens and that little plate took a while to get (from Pentax via KEH). I'm happy to be able to use it again!
So I drove (pretty rough 4x4) up to this spot with my brother last night which was fun in itself. I was shooting the moon coming up using my fairly typical settings I use with a A* 300/4 or 70-200 for moon shots, bracketing and with an IR remote and noticed something. When I was looking through the viewfinder I could see visible vibrations after the mirror would go up and down. So I switched to mirror lockup mode and looking at the photos it seems to make a pretty big difference so I'll need to remember that in the future. Maybe I could also use some weight hanging from the tripod (which I don't usually bother with) or a beanbag too if I need to bracket like that in the future. I need to do some tests to see what my best solution would be.
So this shot is using the lockup function and it came out nice and sharp.

Thanks and yeah I saw your informative review. The size and heft of it make me think twice but they don't seem to be rare so I'll keep pondering.
I have a nice big ball head and RRS clamp so I imagine I'll be OK there.
I'd really like the 150-450 for my K mount gear but I don't want to spend that kind of money right now.

You've got me looking at them on eBay now. Would be fun for extreme tele moon photos, I bet.
How do you like it? Have you tried it on a K-1 or crop body?

Thanks, my plan was to include the rising nearly full moon among those peaks but the clouds prevented that. Maybe I can catch it tonight but the forecast isn't looking favorable. ---------- Post added 10-23-18 at 11:46 AM ----------
Yes, significantly more than $25 but it also came with a matched 1.4x TC and I think it was a good value.

I'm really liking this 645 A* 300/4 when the shot calls for it. I replaced a 67 300/4 with it and rendering is very similar but the 645 version is quite a bit smaller and lighter. It was a bit more than $25, lol! IMGP4706-Edit by Matt Burt, on Flickr

My A* 300/4 is getting a lot more use now that I have the K-1 and I also don't have any other FF lenses above 100mm.

I've looked at that too. I'm trying to work out a way to protect myself without deet (or with less of it) and make it just a few compact items I can always have along just in case. So the gloves and head net can work with my regular clothes to do the trick most of the time. But that bug jacket or the whole suit is tempting. Just know that if the mesh touches your exposed skin they can bite you through it so you still need sleeves underneath.

Right I had my rain shell on to protect my upper body and a few got through those cotton pants. The shell worked for my upper body but it was way too hot! The worst was my right hand which I carried the tripod with. I probably had 50 bites on the back of my hand. I've since purchased a pair of these gloves which reduced the number to the single digits on a similar outing. Not perfect but much better. I also have some better pants that are nylon shell material made by North Face. |

Interesting, I'd like to give it a try. I haven't had much luck with anything except deet and/or completely covering up. The short season here seems like it makes them extra aggressive when they are plentiful and they certainly are plentiful right now as it's been rainy and leaving puddles around.
Here's what it was like recently during sunset near a wetland after flood waters had just receded. I had to break out the heavy armor! |

Wonderful shot! Good idea to use a tele. I have shot them with wides but never got anything this good! ---------- Post added 06-24-16 at 11:03 AM ----------

I have a couple of 300mm lenses, a K mount A* 300/4 and a more recent purchase for my 645D, a 67 300/4 adapted to 645.
I'm enjoying long landscapes with the 67 300 where I got all that good tele compression but with a wider FOV. The effect is kind of like a panorama with the A*300 but in a single frame. IMGP2646-Edit by Matt Burt, on Flickr
