I'm the race photographer for an ultra endurance running race near a neighboring town that was held on Saturday. The race is kind of mind boggling at 50 Miles and about 12,000' of elevation gain.
To do the shoot I had to backpack into a wilderness area which was 5 Miles and just under 4000' of climbing which was plenty difficult for me! After spending the night I got up at 5 to intercept the runners on this high ridge as the sun came up. With all the hiking I wanted to travel light so I brought two crop bodies, my trusty old K-3 and my newer K-3iii. I have bigger/nicer optics but I brought the recently acquired 55-300 PLM to save myself some weight to carry up there since I needed all my camping and survival gear too.
The lens performed well and I like what I got with it. I'm still processing and IDing runners so we can make nice metal prints to give as prizes for the top three men and women.
This guy was in the lead here but ended up third overall.

I dusted off the old DA L 55-300 lens for an assignment to shoot a ultra running race at high altitude on Saturday.
I was originally going to bring my new K-3iii and K-1ii but I needed to be able to backpack in to this location and camp the night before so the 14 pound kit was going to be too much with all the camping gear.
I decided to go all crop and get out my old original K-3 and this 55-300 instead of the K-1 and ff lenses save weight. It cut my weight by 4 pounds which helped but was still a heavy load for the 5 mile 3000' hike.
But it sure is beautiful up there. Those people are a little crazy to run 50 miles of this! |

I took my DA L 55-300 to Tanzania recently. I have nicer lenses now but I wanted something with a long reach but that is also light and not too valuable in case it gets stolen or broken.
It did pretty well most of the time with a little bit of frustrating focus hunting but I figured out how to work around that for the most part. Definitely does well for the price!

Ha ha, I hate those things! They do one of these events at our local fairgrounds which is WAY too close to my house. Lucky for me we were in Australia when they did the last one. Saw lots of CUBS in their utes around Perth!
But the photos look good!

Nice shots! Love that Frank Lloyd Wright house! I helped restore one in Detroit when I was a teen (mostly yard work).

I'm thinking we are looking at different crampons. I sure wouldn't want the snow & ice crampons I'm interested in for slippery rocks.
I'm looking at these:
But speaking of falling I took a pretty hard fall right on to my camera while skiing earlier this season. I had my K-5 with 18-135 mounted in the big front pocket of my jacket. The hood was on and I came out of my binding going pretty fast and landed right on the camera.
It broke a little piece of the plastic that makes the threads for the hood on the lens - I wish it was the hood's threads but it was the lens' instead. Fortunately it doesn't seem to matter as far as using the hood.
The worst part was my bruised ribs. I was pretty winded when I fell but the ribs stayed sore for a couple of weeks.
I have since purchased new bindings! :D

Funny, I was just shopping for crampons for mountaineering! Great shot! I find myself the only one with a camera out sometimes too. So far WR has worked out very well for me.

Yeah, I got my DA L for $250. I think I had to buy an aftermarket hood but it was worth it.
Thanks, the skies were great yesterday evening! One of those moments where I had to pull out the camera and just find something, anything to shoot in that light coming in under the clouds with dark storms in the background. I love it when it does that!

Not that there's anything wrong with the DA L. I got one for the price and it's been great.

Looks nice! There's still spring skiing to be done but I'm looking forward to getting back on the bike too. Hopefully our lower trails will be opening soon too.

One of my wife from skiing today (sorry if you are tired of skiing). We sure are on a great storm cycle. 4 Ft. in the last five days where we have our passes.
