In all sincerity, I love how different we all are. That is why the manufacturers are kept busy expanding and improving the lens line-up.
I recently sold my 10-20 after a survey of my past travel photos showed that I used it less than 5% of the time. I've said it before, some of us naturally "see wide" and some "see long." Different strokes and all that. Keeps life interesting.

The 16-50 is a great lens but a little pricey. For a less expensive alternative, look at the Sigma 17-70 F/2.8-4. Pentax also has a 17-70 but it is a little slower at the wide end at f/4, is more expensive and maybe a tad less sharp. On the plus side, it is lighter and weather resistant.
You might also consider the normal direct replacement for the kit lens, the 18-135 mm. For really light travel with my DSLR, that is the only lens I take.
