I will back you up on that. Not sure what software H.Abendsen is using but I have no issues with K-1 files, including 150mb pixel shift files. I have a newer computer than you, built it last January I think, but nothing really special. Certainly not server level hardware like he has.

I usually have both PS and LR open as well as Outlook, and Firefox with 10 to 15 tabs open. Currently processing K-1 images with all that open plus a 3D drafting program and there is no lag or hesitation in LR. Maybe the Xeon is the problem, we use that for server hardware at work but not usually for workstations. Maybe it is not optimized for image manipulation?

I honestly find it very hard to believe they won't. And 3 months ago I would have said of course they will. But right now there is just a small seed of doubt.

The case for:
- they have announced a new DA*11-18
- APS-C cameras like the k-7, k-5 and k-3 have been their bread and butter for a long time
- FF is great, and greatly appreciated, but not for everyone. So if you do not need a K-1 but want a 'pro' level camera what do you buy?
- Current APS-C offerings are nice but not really in any sense a prosumer body
- k-1 is an amazing landscape camera but the real hole in the Pentax line is a prosumer sports / wildlife body. And that would almost certainly be APS-C

The case against:
- Nikon & Canon and Fuji have all made recent introductions that change the game
- Pentax is a teeny, tiny part of Ricoh. Do they really care if Pentax cameras continue?
- The camera market continues to shrink and without large dollars to spend on R&D and especially marketing maybe it is time to just hang it up
- Theta seems to be doing well. And now we have announced a new GR. Maybe DSLRs are done and the future is Ricoh, not Pentax
- At some point the volume sold drops below economic viability. It takes a lot to keep manufacturing, R&D, support, marketing and service going. Maybe we have reached that point.

I have to say showing a product at a major trade show that your own website indicates is discontinued is, well, strange to say the least. It really shows to me that Ricoh is not in any sense a consumer products company. If that were a business trade show for copiers, yeah maybe that would be fine. And that is at least a big part of the issues we see complained about on this forum daily. Their marketing department is used to dealing with slow turn over business to business products, Not consumer items. If we view their marketing from that mind set, it sort of makes sense. Maybe.......

We also have to keep in mind that things change. Just because they said something last spring does not mean that is still true. That is just business. If the numbers change before a product is too far down the development road it gets canceled. Businesses sometimes make large strategic changes that affect things in strange ways.

I just wish Ricoh would communicate a little bit about their future intentions. I understand why they don't but it makes it difficult to make buying decisions when there is so much uncertainty about what if any products will be available next year or the year after.

Considering that question was almost surely the #1 request in the "what do we ask Ricoh" thread, I'm not sure what to make of that either.

Was the question never asked? Or was it not answered? Or was the interviewer asked to not report on it?

+1. Though I've never used one I would be interested in seeing how it improves focus point selection. Though since I only use single center, I guess maybe not that useful to me..............

Mostly others have said that their opinion differs from yours. Not sure why you keep insisting we are wrong and you are right. That is self-evident for your use case. But not for others.

Also not sure why you are so concerned about getting kicked out of here. Has that happened to you at other places? Most folks here will accept your viewpoint in the spirit in which it is offered as long as you accept that others have opinions as well.

Not sure what else you could say. You have expressed your opinion. And as always all opinions here are welcome. Even ones that do not agree with you.

I suspect this is personal preference but I would say that this is your opinion. Certainly not mine or others. I have used K-5, K-5IIs, K-3 and K-3II. I still own and shoot both K-3II and K-1. In my opinion, using it for paid work, the K-1 interface is by far the best of any camera I have used. But that is just my opinion.

Also, I think the tilting screen on the K-1 is awesome. A feature I thought from seeing it in pictures would be nothing but a gimmick but actually using it in the field it is extremely intuitive and useful. For my work. YMMV.

Just curious but have you actually used a K-1 in the field?

Yes. If it happens at all.

Reasoning:
1) K-3II was actually marked as discontinued by Ricoh. A somewhat unprecedented action when there is no replacement.

So either:
A) Ricoh never intended there to be a K-3II replacement and any comments made about it were by people not in the know or misunderstood

B) They did intend to build one but market changes have made them reconsider and it is now canceled
C) They intended to make one but ran into technical issues. Possibly a move to a new sensor / image processor did not go as smooth as hoped

2) There was no announcement for a K-3II replacement at Photokina nor any further hints that they are working on anything
So either:
A) There is no K-3II replacement
B) It is coming but not for some time
C) It is coming soon but nobody in engineering remembered to tell marketing

My guess is that there will be a replacement for the K-3II and the time frame for actual in store availability will be late 2019 or early 2020. If they were at all close to release (within 6 months) they would have said so and there would have been some hints / leaks.

I have been a staunch supporter / optimist regarding Pentax since 2010. But the current state of things is not sustainable. They have no product to sell nor any hints that one will be forthcoming. I'm afraid my optimism has largely evaporated.

I have not really noticed that. What leads you to that conclusion? Some are selling Pentax gear but seem to be moving to a different brand not necessarily back to APS-C.
Regardless I agree Pentax needs a new prosumer APS-C body. But I doubt we will see it before 4th quarter 2019 or perhaps spring 2020.

If they release a K-02. Which is still (to me ) a viable option. The K-01 did not work out well but there were obvious (in hindsight) errors made. But a mirrorless k-mount is possible, they already did it. But it has to avoid the error made before.
1) Must have EVF
2) Must do competitive video
3) Must have moveable rear LCD
4) Price point must be competitive
5) Styling must be more 'camerish'?? :)

I can't believe I'm even talking about them making a mirrorless.................

I make no claim for reasonableness :) Just explanations. But I'm not sure #4 is not closer to the truth than we might think. We only heard rumors recently, I suspect Ricoh (and all other manufacturers) would have heard something about the new lines from Canon / Nikon months, maybe years ago. So not unreasonable for a company to put a hold on a project until they see how the competition's plan works.
I suspect the K-3III will indeed be something completely new. I think they have taken that line (sensor / image processor) as far as it can go. No improvements possible in AF and video with that hardware chain. Time to walk away and start a new beginning. Maybe that is still a DSLR format, maybe it is a k-mount mirrorless. Maybe nothing at all....

Yep, another good one. And considering the announcements the last few weeks might have been a good decision if true.

The point being there are numerous possible reasons for no successor to the K-3II.

In a shrinking market inventory control is of primary importance. Making absolutely sure that the previous model is gone before the next one arrives is critical. The opposite is true (or at least unimportant) in a growing market as the old model can be discounted and still sold. But in a shrinking market all that does is reduce margins.

Ricoh seems to understand the current market perhaps better than others. That does not make customers used to an 18 month life cycle happy but I think that is the new reality. Perhaps a 4 year life cycle will be the new norm.

I see Canon / Nikon announcements as desperation attempts to keep the product churn cycle moving forward. Just a reason to get customers to keep spending money and keep those expensive factories running. Ricoh seems to be going the other way: match production to demand. Boring. Safe. And profitable.

Here you go:

1) Waiting on new sensor
2) Waiting on new image processor
3) Design team tied up with KP before moving to K-3III
4) Rumors of Canon / Nikon mirrorless has decided them to move to mirrorless for their APS-C flagship thus stopping development on k-3 line

5) No time on the production line until 2019
6) k-7/k-5/k-3 line is over and the APS-C flagship will be completely new
7) Planned intent to reduce k-3/k-3II inventory to zero before introducing a new body

Chris, I read that statement three times before I tried to answer. I'm still amazed you even typed it. How on earth do you know when they intended the K-3II replacement to be here? Certainly I don't.
The plan is the plan. And we do not know what the plan is.

I would be interested in your impression of the KP with the 560 once you get a chance to work with them. Particularly any difference in AF between K-3 and KP that you notice.

That is not going to be a popular opinion here. True, but not popular. :)

And if you look at Ricoh's other business lines that is the attitude there as well. They have little in the copier line that is ground breaking. They just provide solid equipment that does it's job with no fuss at a price that works for their customers. Kinda boring, actually. :)
