Is Pentax in the need of a M/L system?

If Pentax produces a mirrorless with a different mount perhaps they drop k-mount and then where are you with your 'big money' invested? But unless I'm wrong that is not an issue for you I thought you had sold all your Pentax gear? Or am I not correct?

Personally I think the smart play for Ricoh is to plod along adding a bit to the k-mount line as resources allow and make some money. Let the other players fight it out in the mirrorless arena and when the dust settles then decide if there is any future in ILCs at all. It makes no sense to me for them take a huge capital risk in developing yet another mount and camera line to sell into a dying market.

The purpose of Ricoh is to make money for its owners, nothing else. Why take such a risk when that capital invested elsewhere will return a profit with less risk?

People is expecting too much. Just enjoy the gear you have and quit worrying about Ricoh. They are not paying me to worry about them, they have plenty of executives they are paying to worry.

+1 Just coasting. Which is not necessarily bad as long as they have enough volume to be profitable. Maximum return on little investment. Which in a shrinking market just might be the wisest course. Not fun for those looking for innovation but Ricoh belongs to it's shareholders, not its customers.

I'm not so sure of that. The part about what they were expecting. We have used Ricoh copiers at our office as long as I've been there. They are well aware of 'paperless' and have an entire suite of solutions that cover scanning, storing and retrieving documents digitally. I got a several hour demo of the system and while it was more (and more expensive) than we need I was impressed.

The demo was in 2013 I think. I made a comment at the time about them buying Pentax. The reply was that they were very excited by this because of a number of technologies Pentax had for optical scanning related to document storage. Now the people I was talking with were 'business solution' people, not camera people so I've no idea if what they said had any validity. They seemed to only vaguely understand that Pentax was a camera. Their focus was on document handling. But Ricoh is well aware of the marketplace for their core products and view themselves as far more than a 'copier' company.

I suspect he meant that a 'better' photo (for some definition of better) can be achieved if the user interface makes it easier/faster/simpler to actually make a given photo. What features of an EVF that might improve the users ability to capture a particular image is what is questionable.

An example might be focus peaking in the EVF or highlight clipping showing on the EVF. Do those features result in a 'better' image? Maybe, maybe not.

Probably not. Ricoh seems very satisfied to stay a niche player and just make and sell good cameras without a lot of hype. I see where you are going with this but like I've said before this is not a soccer match. "Our" team does not have to win, just stay in business and make money. Nothing Pentax can do is going to move it up to the sales level of the big three. So they won't try, just make good cameras that sell to people who want what they make.

Will Pentax eventually (within the next 20 years) make a MILC? Probably, but don't hold your breathe. Everything we have seen indicates they are 100% focused on the DSLR and K-mount. If they are still making cameras in 10 years then maybe they will think about working on MILC.
