Despite years of posts stating all Pentax needs to do is tweak an existing design to make it (Choose one: FF, faster, use a new motor, use an in lens motor, take pictures of unicorns) Pentax has in every case I am aware of started from scratch to make a new lens to modern design specs. As you say, tweaking a design that is antiquated and was built using antiquated methods and materials is really a non-starter. Much simpler to just start over and design it to be built on the equipment and with the materials in use today.

That would create a classic manager's nightmare. No right answer, and people yelling at you no matter what you decide. Stop making 50mm's and go out of stock of a proven seller? Or keeping making 50's and delay the 85mm? Glad I don't have to make that call.

This forum tends to be prime lens oriented but not everyone is. I suspect Pentax research shows far higher potential sales with zoom lenses than with niche primes. I also wonder if the sales numbers generated by the DFA 50mm altered the direction and priority of the lens queue. Just speculating, but if the DFA 50mm did not sell as well as hoped maybe the DFA 85mm got pushed back in the queue.

I think they are building out 3 separate lens ranges. f/2.8 'pro', f/4 'enthusiast', and variable aperture 'consumer'. But from what we have seen so far the build quality of all ranges is very high, unlike in the past where many of the consumer lenses were cheaply made (FA 28-90...).
So having a 70-200 f/4 'enthusiast' lens and a 50-250 f/4.5-5.8 'consumer' lens is not that odd.
I would have been in the market for the 70-200 f/4 but it would have been shorter than I wanted. So a 50-250ish would be just fine as a companion to the DFA 28-105.

I don't think so, they have already the 150-450 and I do not think there is room in the catalog for another lens that covers that range. I think it will be 50 - 250, or maybe 50-280. Possibly even 50-200 but I hope not. Anyway, it will be smaller and compact, so not big like the 150-450.
